DRAFT TIME
Never watched The Office, but I love Always Sunny. Jake mentioned one of the better episodes, but I also love the DENNIS Sytem. Another great one is The Gang Wrestles for the Toops. If you haven't seen these you should. I plan on one day watching The Office, there's just so much good TV out there. Many would disagree with my definition of good TV, though, because I like almost everything.Brewers wrote:I'll play. Favorite Office Episode is the hour long Meredith Palmer Memorial Celebrity Rabies Awareness Pro-Am Fun Run Race For the Cure.
Since Jake threw in an episode of Sunny, no sitcom has ever had me laughing as hard as Sweet Dee's Dates a Retarded Person. First Sunny episode I ever saw, so it completely blindsided me.
Archer's Placebo Effect episode is a close second.
I'll give the token disagreement and opine that there's so very, very little good tv out there. So much of it has become homogenized, lowest common denominator garbage, every network is pretty much the same. Channels like Discovery, A&E and The Learning Channel used to actually put on programming that was distinctive from other channels. Now a show on A&E would be just as much at home on MTV, TNT or Fox. Does MTV even play music videos any more?Phillies wrote:Never watched The Office, but I love Always Sunny. Jake mentioned one of the better episodes, but I also love the DENNIS Sytem. There's no music on MTV, no history on the History Channel and I watched the Learning Channel, didn't learn shit.
You're both right, there is some great tv out there hidden amongst tons and tons of really soul crushing garbage. God bless instant Netflix.
The garbage is for females. I keep telling my wife that smoking all the weed in the world is not nearly as brain damaging as a real housewives marathon. I have no science to back that up but I have no doubt that it is true.

I agree. There's a lot of really shitty TV out there. I guess there's just a lot of TV in general, so we're more likely to get a few gems in the pile, but if you want to learn some stuff and be intrigued by natural science or history, your best bet is probably finding some BBC documentaries, because US network television is mostly geared towards numbing your mind.

I think TV has definitely gotten better over the past few years now that the Reality Shows have finally shown a decline in ratings.
Shows like the Walking Dead, Mad Men, Shameless, Breaking Bad, Orange is the new black, Sherlock & Elementary, Parks & Recreation, American Horror Story, Always Sunny/The League, Game of Thrones, Grimm, Hannibal, Boardwalk Empire, The Following, The American, Girls, Supernatural, Arrested Development (return) etc...etc...etc...plus new shows like True Detective (Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey), Rake and the reemergence of 24 - there's really shows for everyone's strokes right now. I have two very large DVR's (and Netflix) and still have a hard time keeping up with shows. I think the TV lineup is as strong now as it has been in some time. The way television is viewed today, the actual network matters less and less. I couldn't even tell you which networks most of these shows come one (aside from FXX comedies).

I just can't keep up with all those series since not many are accessible. They have a critical running plot where if you miss an episode, it doesn't make sense. That's why I don't pay for cable, I just watch Netflix. I'm too busy to keep up with shit, but sometimes a weekend marathon is nice.
Like I said, there's some gems out there, but a lot of stuff many used to enjoy now sucks (ESPN, MTV, Discovery Channel, History Channel...)

The last time I watched History Channel was for Hatfields and McCoys. Like Steve said, the best place is BBC, though PBS has some great documentaries. I use a lot of BBC stuff on youtube in class. If FX or AMC debut something new I give it a chance but other than that, there is very little on TV I watch. Parks and Rec and Community, Modern Family and How I Met Your Mother (which I only watch because it is the last season) are the only really good comedies on network tv. I don't even bother with network dramas.

Comedy Central for South Park and a few other things.
Food Network/Bravo/Food Channel because I am a foodie and love the various cooking shows and learning how to make new dishes.
Fox programming in general for their comedic stuff.
Most basic network TV I avoid like the plague.
And biggest problem, Holly has run out of ideas...we have produced a generation of idiots that are not creative on their own...hence why most movies these days suck too...seriously, I just saw a trailer for the new Robocop...really? The plot will still suck, just better graphics.
So I applaud the visual and audio production folks...but just because you can CGI the shit out of anything doesn't mean we want to watch something that was made the first time over 50 years ago and you decided to re-hash and new age it.

I'm disturbed at how much of this I agree with.Cardinals wrote:The last time I watched History Channel was for Hatfields and McCoys. BBC, PBS, and Netflix are pretty much it. Finishing up the last season of How I Met Your Mother, which is just about the only network (or cable) TV the wife and I watch.
Shows I've watched/finished last few years:
Breaking Bad - simply awesome
Sons of Anarchy - this show is amazing
The Killing - not mentioned yet, fantastic show
Walking Dead
Hell on Wheels - I haven't watch season 3 yet, but the first two were great
Dexter - This was my favorite show until the last season. Final season was AWFUL and the way they ended it was laughable
Lost - I get a lot of crap for my love of this show, but I get it from people that think the whole show is pergatory. It's not. This show is fantastic.
Boardwalk Empire - Actually gave up on this in season 3. It got too slow and they killed off my favorite character. Nucky as the forefront didn't work for me
Game of Thrones - Can get slow, but I love this show.
Two Cinemax shows I'm sure not many watch - Banshee and Strike Back. Total bro shows and they are awesome.
How I Met Your Mother - my favorite comedy
Other comedys - South Park, Workaholics, Always Sunny, New Girl (It's funny I swear), Happy Endings (also funny I swear), East Bound and Down (need to watch latest season), Parks and Rec. Archer is on my list of things to watch
Definitely some others I am forgetting, but I hit on most.

This thread should be called "TV Time" or maybe "The Marlins are so dominating the draft we'd rather talk about TV"
Mostly I watch a lot of sports and H2 (anything on ancient civilizations, including Ancient Aliens, which is ridiculous at times, but entertaining) Shows I've been into the past couple years...
Breaking Bad - great TV
The Wire - had to mention it, because it's the only show I've ever liked better than Breaking Bad, and if you haven't seen it, you need to
Game of Thrones - Great show, great midget, can't wait for next season
Archer - H. Jon Benjamin kills the title role as a superspy/drunk/womanizer and generally hilarious dude
Rick and Morty - adult swim cartoon with only a few episodes. Creative and frickin' funny as hell
Hell on Wheels - if you liked Deadwood, you will enjoy this show
House of Cards - political drama/ dark comedy with Kevin Spacey at his best
Walking Dead - I'm a sucker for zombies, and Frank Darabont's show does the zombie apocalypse as well or better than any movie
Mad Men - I'll admit I'm behind in this show because the plot doesn't always keep me engaged, but the whole style of 60s suits smoking cigarettes and drinking whiskey is cool, and I dig the redhead
Boardwalk Empire - this show has done enough to keep me watching. I'm a big history nerd, so that helps, but there are enough compelling characters besides Buscemi to keep me coming back, so far
Sons of Anarchy - this show was awesome for a few seasons, became kind of meh, then ended with a bang. I'd recommend it if you have some time to kill
Vikings - like I said, I'm a big history nerd. Can't wait for season 2 of this show
Spartacus - blood and boobs in ancient Rome. Not particularly well acted or written, this show managed to keep me entertained mostly by having brutal gladiator fights and excessive nudity
Justified - Timothy Olyphant playing the only role he's capable of. If you liked Deadwood, you will probably like this show.
Dr. Who - I'll admit it. I watched it when I was a kid, and rediscovered it last year.
Copper - BBC show about a NYC cop in the 5 points post-civil war. Good stuff.
The League - I love this show. I'll admit I'm biased because I went to college with Ruxin and the girl who played the witch on the "Ghost Monkey" episode, but I think this show is hilarious.
Always Sunny... - very funny show that I usually catch in syndication

Justified is my favorite drama, I've had 2 bloodhounds named Raylan and Harlan since the show started. Back on tonight and this season is about the Crowe family, and if that means more Dewey Crowe then I'm all aboard.
I've not watched one second of programming on Fox that isn't sports since they unjustly canceled King of the Hill to make room for another shitty Seth MacFarlane show in 2009. It will always be my favorite show of all time. Then I discovered Firefly and hate Fox even more.
Whoever said Hollywood is out of ideas is absolutely right (I'm sure it won't be hard for Gabe to agree, I've read/seen his stuff and it is hilarious, but it's not all dick jokes so he can't get a break). Every CBS comedy is nothing but sex jokes except for The Millers, which I always forget about. We Are Men was actually really good, and not a typical CBS sitcom, but of course they axed it after 2 episodes. I can remember back when I used to go to the movies seemingly every other week, now I go maybe 4 or 5 times a year. Everything is remakes and I don't think they actually watch the original of what they're remaking. I didn't see the Miami Vice movie because I heard it was nothing like the show. Red Dawn I avoided like the plague because I'd actually like to believe the actors would know how to use a gun in real life and hey, in the 1984 version Leah Thompson and Jennifer Grey didn't look like models once they'd been roughing it and doing hit and run attacks for months. The Dukes of Hazzard movie pissed me off, they swore more in that movie than the entire run of the show and they had the characters completely wrong. Hollywood sucks, if the Coen Brothers don't make it or Christian Bale isn't in it, might as well avoid it

Glad someone mentioned Deadwood, probably my all time favorite (with The Wire and Breaking Bad). Swearengen is my favorite character of all time.
