Getting Shit Done

Post by Royals »

I had a lengthy discussion with Brett Z this afternoon on a wide array of topics. One of which was summed up nicely in this comment:

BZalaski12 (1:14:45 PM): trust me - i love this league, and the reason i was a big fan was - regardless if i thought it was right or not - people were allowed to express an opinion and then shit got done
BZalaski12 (1:14:54 PM): that's not happening

he's absolutely right.
I think we've started to do a better job of letting people express their opinions on stuff before we vote on it, but we're still way too slow in the "Getting Shit Done" department.
First, some reminders.
1. If a rule question or interpretation issue is brought up at any time, answer it. We're all ExCo members, we all have that authority. If you aren't sure how to answer it, ask me. I'm not saying 'ask me' out of any sort of power grab (that's the opposite of the point of the ExCo) but because I wrote most of the rules and have the most experience with how they've been applied in the past to questionable situations. If it's really dicey and questionable I'm not going to try to make up some new interpretation, we'll just put it to the whole ExCo.
2. When we put things up for discussion to the ExCo like that, we need to come up with answers faster.

Some suggestions:
We should come up with some way for the league as a whole to call for us to vote on an issue and make a decision. not "When we get around to it," not "after we debate it further," but an immediate vote. Even if one of the vote options is "Further debate needed".
We need to make sure we get the vote results/decisions out faster. Once a vote is cast solidifying a decision, we should announce it to the league (provided it is an issue that needs to be announced). If you're the deciding vote that shoots down or approves something or if you're the first person to see that the vote has been decided (i.e. 5 in favor or two opposed) then make an announcement to the league. Doesn't matter how passionate you are about the particular topic. Just remember... Be polite, be neutral in your commentary and remember that the ExCo is united on all decisions.

Any additional thoughts or suggestions?

Since JP and I are both opposed to the so-called Rule 5 Draft, it is apparently not going to happen. No need to bother with a vote ... Would you like me to announce that the Executive Council has decided there will be no Rule 5 Draft?

(Somehow I screwed up the quote mechanism ...)

Seems fine to me.

One thing to bear in mind though, sometimes it's good to just let the league debate something for a while, even if a decision has already been effectively made, such as in this case. Members like being able to have a say or just express their opinions. Sometimes too a new idea will come out of it or you may find your opinion change. I think in this case the debate has probably run it's course.

I know that may seem obvious but I felt I should toss that out there just to be sure.

I was under the impression that 4-2 was considered enough to carry the day in the ExCo, when did everything have to become 5-1?

Bren set it up as 5-1 so that anything that he disagreed with had to be unanimous to pass.

Just kidding Bren. :)

That philosophy flew out the window in a hurry ... sounded good at the time though.

I was openly opposed to what you guys did beforehand, I wasn't going to step back into line just because you guys fucked up and held a meritless vote with Zero debate and without ever bothering to ask me what I thought on the matter. You guys fucked up, I'm not going to be polite and pretend you didn't. You fucked up and you insulted me.

I agree, in principle. If I could go back to Sunday when I first saw the vote (which was almost over) I would have deleted the thread and posted a new one apologizing for the deletion but saying that:
1. There needs to be a public discussion on the issue before a vote is held
2. There absolutely needs to be an ExCo discussion before any vote is held on any issue

Except that you weren't going to say "if you do this I feel strongly enough that I'll quit simming," and the reasons you've provided I don't think are compelling enough for anyone to change their mind, so what exactly would have happened differently?

For me, personally, everyone in the league would have at least had an opportunity to express their opinion on the issue. What you guys did was essentially hold an election without letting any of the candidates speak or render a verdict without a trial.

i still think you're damn fools to ignore the facts about simming but i doubt I'd have quit over it.
