In this case I think he's the only one that will cause a fuss because last year when JP brought up the possibility of removing Degan from the league, Bren shot it down right away because he was an original member. That's why I think he'll be the only one to raise a stink and why I singled him out in this case. I don't see anyone else that will come to bat for him. Jim are you on board?

I am ... and I am a bit surprised he is still here as it appeared just a bit ago that he was "ready" to resign ...

Good job Aaron with taking care of it.

That said, if we are to move the teams around we should do that sooner rather than later. I talked to John, hypothetically, saying that the Mets may be available as a result and that he would like to move there if possible, but wouldn't be heartbroken if he didn't. I've already spoken to Levine in person about going to Colorado if the opportunity arose, and he said he would like to as well. Again, I didn't say anything was definite, but I do know that we did say that relocation was do-able for GMs when their favorite team arose, or for the few GMs that didn't get a chance to relocate when they were put into the league whenever they got in.

We should also encourage everybody to go out looking for a good, active and qualified GM to take over Degan's roster.

Agreed, I was trying to figure out what would be an appropriate time frame for posting something to that effect.

Let's just "let" Brett D leave and replace him in Chicago ... we can do our usual bi-annual potential franchise dance after the 2009 IBC season ... if things work out John and I (and others) might be able to relocate, If not, the IBC is none the worse off.

Personally I am still a 3rd or 4th place team for another year whether it is in the NLE or the ALC ...
Bringing this part up again.

Jim, I really don't think you'd have anything to be concerned about moving to Chicago, and then sending John to the Mets and possibly somebody to Colorado or whatever. It's always been in IBC's policy to allow people to move to their favorite teams, regardless of the circumstances surrounding it. The exception was Bren's charade this year when he "demanded" Nils take over in Boston, but the season had already begun anyway.

That said, if you want the White Sox, they are open, and there isn't a better time to go take them. I would not be worried about the leagues perception of it either. From Degan's post, it entirely looks like he resigned- which he basically did, and he was going to last year anyway. If some misfit truly thinks we booted Degan to free up the White Sox for you, that's just asinine and silly.

The White Sox are yours for the taking as far as I am concerned.

I second what JP said Jim. Nobody is going to think this was some master plan to get you the White Sox. They're your favorite team, they're open, take them. With how well Degan handled this, there will be no problems at all with potential moves and bringing in a new GM. Its went about as good as we could've ever hoped.

Now, when do we ask the league to help in the search for a new GM? It's been over a day since Degan's post, I see no reason to lollygag on this, he said his goodbye, we got work to do now. We didn't step on his toes and there's been an acceptable amount of time, IMO, since his resignation to bring up a replacement search

Okay -

So now I am chasing Brett P, Z, Andrew and trying to stay ahead of Kelly ... probably need to relook at this roster from the perspective of the Cell. Who's got Jim Thome now days? I'll need a DH ...

So now the question becomes, who do we offer NYM to? Anderson and Lape are both Mets fans. Anderson has been here longer, but has had a chance to move before.

Should it become a competitive balance thing?

I think since John's had the chance, you offer it to him first. Seniority has to count for something. If he doesn't move, or drags his feet on giving us an answer, give Shawn the chance to move. He's never had a chance to move and is putting together a nice squad.

I don't think we need to worry about competitive balance. With the exception of the AL West, every division has teams that will be good this year and into the future. Sure the NL East may not have a future juggernaut looming, but Brandon may do a quick one year reload and be the team to beat in 2010 and this year the NL East will just have a division champ with 90 wins. No big deal, its happened before, it'll happen again.

John should get first choice on the Mets based on his seniority and then we'll deal with Colorado from there. as I've said before, competitive balance is overrated and whatever we do would probably be obsolete in a year anyway.

The only bad thing about offering it to John is that the NLE will go from weak to even weaker, while the NLW (if Jake moves there) which is already tough will get a little tougher moving forward. You're making a 5 a 4 and a 6 a 7 (on a scale of 1-10) or something along those lines.

Lape would be better for competitive balance, but I take it that you guys feel like seniority is more important than competitive balance (which is fine, just not something I've weighed before).

I think John can (re)assemble a competitive team for Citifield pretty quickly ...

BUt he's not a stupid GM (from what I've seen). What's wrong with trusting our GMs to make smart decisions that are aimed at making their teams competitive?

Jake Levine has expressed interest in moving to Colorado. Is there any reason, given how unattractive that situation is, that he shouldn't be allowed to?

To me it's a unique situation because it would be pretty unappealing to be a new team taking over Degen's roster and getting placed in Coors. Looking at the 08 season disk it has probably passed Arlington again as the worst all around pitching park for DMB, and the NLW is a tough division moving forward.

Obviously, Jake is a friend of mine so I'd like to help him move so I'm probably biased a bit there.

That said, we did say we would try to put a stop to moving out of divisions, except in the case of favorite teams...with the exception of people who didn't get a chance to relocate ever, or the newbies that were thrust into their situations. Jake would fall under that category still, except he has seniority over the rest of the "newbies" being Gudim, Lape, Kelly. From talking to Gudim earlier this offseason when he was asking if we could move him (when we had a full league) I said I doubt it, and he said (I THINK) that he'd never want to play in Coors anyway. I'm not even sure how that had come up, but I'm 95% sure he wouldn't want to go to Coors.

To me, Jake has put in two pretty good years and is one of the more active GMs and tries to spice stuff up now and then and I see no reason to deny his request.

I think if Jake moves we all need to call him a pussy for bailing from a tough division. But if he wants to move, are we opening the Brewers up to Jason or Kelly? I don't see why Kelly would want to move, and moving from the AL East to the NLC is pretty much a wash

It does open a bit of a can of worms. The only distinction that I see is the issue of assigning a team to Colorado. Even though the reality is that there are a handful of hitters and/or homerun parks (Jim just moved to one volunatrily) and Coors isn't that much worse than that one or Texas or Arizona, it has not historically been a popular destination or an easy one to keep stable in IBC (just look at the GM history prior to John). But that's not the way everyone will look at it.

As far as Jason and Kelly, I guess we could tell them that this is their chance, if they're wanting to move to a different spot other than the team they root for, Milwaukee is it. Like you said, from a competitive standpoint Kelly would be going to a harder division, so it would have to be personal preference/DH/H2H versus Jagger and stuff like that. Jason I could see moving to Milwaukee though.

I'm open, but I do think that if we're going to start allowing team movement all over the place (and this becomes a 5 or 6 team chain), we might as well just repeal the "no movement" rule and give everyone the chance to relocate.
