Apparently the Pads also turned down an offer from the Reds of Dmitri Young and Ben Broussard for Phil Nevin. Talentwise, at least thatÃs reasonable. I think Broussard is going to be a stud hitter, in the Brian Giles mode. As much as I like Nevin, I would have been very tempted to pull the trigger on this one.

the Yanks' plan appears still to be to only make a deal if one falls into their lap.
That may happen with Schmidt, a righty who is 6-6 with a 4.61 ERA. The Pirates have been looking for prospects by shopping him as a package deal with Williams. But Schmidt, who is making $3.2 million this season, will be a free agent next season. So will Williams, who is earning $1.2 million.
That leaves both potentially unattractive. Houston, for instance, has balked at trading top prospects for Schmidt because the Astros don't want to give up anything for someone who likely would bolt after the season.
For the Yanks to get Schmidt, it might take only a minor-league pitcher such as Adrian (El Duquecito) Hernandez or maybe Alex Graman. The Yankees have been approached repeatedly about lefty Brandon Claussen, who is 6-2 with a 2.14 ERA and 102 strikeouts in 92 2/3 innings at Double-A Norwich. But the Yanks don't want to trade him because they regard him highly.

In an annual Hot Stove League tradition, the Tigers worked a deal with Houston, this time bringing in Roger Cedeno to take over right field and fill the leadoff spot -- a major liability in 2000. His presence at the top of the order should ease the pressure on fellow outfielders Juan Encarnacion and Bobby Higginson to do it all, as was sometimes the case last season.
Also coming over from the Astros were right-hander Chris Holt, who will take the departed Hideo Nomo's spot in the rotation, and young catcher Mitch Meluskey, who steps in for Brad Ausmus.
The key losses in that deal, though, were bullpen stalwarts Doug Brocail and Nelson Cruz. Brocail's steadying presence as the primary setup man was a big reason the Tigers were able to cut their ERA from 5.17 in 1999 to 4.73 last year -- not to mention Todd Jones' ability to pick up his club-record 42 saves. Cruz led the team with a 3.00 ERA and had a 5-2 record in 28 appearances.

Gary Sheffield got his wish Tuesday when the Los Angeles Dodgers traded him to the Atlanta Braves for Brian Jordan, Odalis Perez and a minor league pitcher.

Another oldy, but goodie:
According to Newsday, the Mets talked to the Rangers about a possible deal for Alfonso Soriano right after the A-Rod trade. They were told he was not available.
However, it appears that they have changed their minds.
The two teams are now resuming talks. Because the A-Rod deal had left Texas without a shortstop, they are inquiring about the availability of Jose Reyes, a natural (and great defensive) shortstop who may move to second because of the signing of Kaz Matsui.
A source near the Rangers has said that RP Fransisco Cordero and OF Kevin Mench could be packaged with Soriano.

The Los Angeles Times speculated yesterday that the Angels could be a frontrunner for Alex Rodriguez, obstensibly in the upcoming offseason. Bill Shaikin speculated that such an acquisition would make Orlando Cabrera the odd man out.
On the heels of that story comes an intriguing trade rumor from Halos Heaven. Yes, it is a blog, but I have known the author for some time and can vouch for the authenticity of his sources. He says Bill Stoneman and Brian Cashman have a tentative plan in place where the Angels could trade Dustin Moseley, Jose Molina, and Jered Weaver for Alex Rodriguez.
