Re: State of the Yankees
Post-Deadline, Slightly Hungover Roster Update:
Catcher: Moises Ballesteros is not going to win any Gold Glove's, but the dude can flat out hit and he's the future of the position for me. Even though he's a '24 draftee, Walker Janek is an MLB-caliber defender already and will be my backup moving forward. Alirio Ferrebus still has a tremendous amount of upside, so he'll continue to be fun to track.
First Base: Fangraphs still had Tre Morgan as their #82 prospect and I still fall in that camp. He was never going hit for the average he did in 2024, but he's an almost .400 obp as a 22 year old in AAA, while already being a Gold Glove caliber fielder.- Behind him I picked up AAAA sluggers Tim Elko and Michael Toglia who both have bombed their way to the majors, but have some struggles once there. Hopefully one can click in. With the Mets' stacked infield, Jacob Reimer could find his way to some ab's here, too.
Second Base: I'd consider this a position of strength. All the way up to AAA and a consensus top 50 prospect, Jett Wiliams is the high-end future at the position. Caleb Durbin has been a 2.5 win player in his rookie year in Milwaukee and continues to earn ab's. Demetrio Crisantes and Adael Amador are both former top 100 players with tremendous hit tools. Connor Norby and Oswald Peraza are still both interesting plays to impact here.
Shortstop: Colt Emerson is the present and future of the position for me. He's a consensus top 15 prospect and a tremendous all around player. Joshua Kuroda-Grauer is not a super sexy option with almost no power, but he can hit, get on base, and pick it. Kellon Lindsey and Walker Martin are both high upside plays worth stashing. Oswald Peraza will get another full run at the MLB level next year. It has to go better than it has to date.
Third Base: Big are of improvement for me. While moving Marte was tough, both Brett Baty and Ben Williamson are solid options to start for me short-term and long-term. Baty has really turned a corner at the MLB level and Williamson is an elite fielder who held his own at the MLB level, but has mashed at AAA. Jacob Reimer has powered his way on to top 100 lists and represents really good upside for me at the hot corner. Eric Bitonti and Chase Harlan both have massive power upside down the developmental ladder.
Corner Outifeld: Envisioning in their prime's Jasson Dominguez & Lazaro Montes manning the corners is incredibly exciting. While Jasson is establishing himself, having top 100 prospect and high floor Ryan Waldschmidt around is a nice backup option if Montes never makes it all the way there. Chase Davis is a nice upside play with still untapped power.
Center Field: This was an area that needed focus going into the deadline that I'm very happy with the results. If Emmanuel Rodriguez can stay on the field and curb his strikeouts even just a hair, he has the upside of a top 5-10 player in the sports. Since that's still an 'if', grabbing Nathan Church is a tremendous backup option. Always a top tier fielder, Church mashed his way to the MLB and near top 100 prospect status this year. Theo Gillen is an almost consensus top 75 prospect with a really fun upside and Brandon Winokur remains one of the most enticing athletes in the minors.
Starting Pitching: I'll still be looking for an ace upside pitcher, but I'm happy with the group. Cam Schlittler has quickly pitched his way on to top 100 lists and has been excellent to start his MLB career. Khal Stephen and Carlos Lagrange have pitched their way on to top 100 lists and provide #3-ish starter upside. Caden Dana was still a FanGraphs top 100 prospect because the electric stuff is still there, just his command took a step back. He's 21 so he's got time to figure it out.
Joe Boyle was lights out in the minors before struggling again bouncing between starter and reliever in the MLB. Randy Vasquez is not sexy but will get you outs at the back of a rotation. Hayden Wesneski and Chase Hampton are exciting arms who will be back from TJ next season.
JR Ritchie and Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz both had excellent seasons this year and have pitched their way near top 100 lists. Lucas Braun, Patrick Copen, Jackson Cox, Jaden Hamm, & Trevor Harrison all provide solid depth.
Bullpen: This will move and change a lot as my team gets closer to being competitive. Justin Martinez and Andrew Walters have proven themselves on the MLB level but ran into TJ. Juan Burgos, Mason Fluharty, & Andre Granillo are all fun arms who have pitched their way to the MLB level. Micah Ashman, Hayden Durke, and Welinton Herrera all were noted for being MiLB relievers of the year at their levels. Matt Gage, Brent Headrick, Carson Seymour, and Michael Tonkin all provide me human SIM people.
Draft: I'll be able to add to my squad with 3 picks in the first round (10-15, 20-30, 20-30 ranges) of a fun draft. With a deep crop of '24 players, I'll have to figure out how I look at rounds 2-5.
