Re: 2020 Detroit Tigers

Well, 2020 has come to an end in the playoffs for the Tigers yet again.

It was a little bit of a disappointing season all-in-all in 2020, though it was not completely unexpected. In the offseason, I made a concerted effort to get younger. That meant dealing away an elite pitcher in Max Scherzer. That also came with dealing away Freddie Freeman, who consistently underperformed for me in Detroit (congrats to Nick for unlocking his true potential that DMB could not previously see for him). I also moved Chris Sale, Nolan Arenado and Jose Altuve, which created a large sim gap at 2B (though it turns out dealing them cursed all three in real life).

This team struggled to outpace even the Twins, who traded several key players in tank trades before the trade deadline. With Mookie Betts a .267 DMB hitter, Corey Seager a .242 DMB hitter and only Devers beating his projection offensively, the team limped to 91 wins, down from 2019's 117-win season.

At the same time, a strong young pitching staff led a charge into the playoffs, taking the ALDS with ease before making it to Game 7 of the ALCS against the league's best team. Going up 3 games to 1 signaled a pretty good chance to advance, but after losing a close Game 5 and blowing Game 6, it seemed obvious this team wouldn't be advancing. The comical finish to Game 7 sealed the season.

To get to the ALCS and push it to the 7th inning of Game 7 seems like a bit of an overachievement, but given the talent on the roster, it also feels like an underachievement. Weird season either way.

After some tough injuries and the weird 2020 MLB season, it will be interesting to see how ZiPS projections roll out and how it affects some players who had a poor 60 games. Some of that will drive what the offseason looks like in Detroit.
