Down on the Farm - 2021

Post by Braves »

6/28

1. Korey Lee, C, Astros
Team: Double-A Corpus Christi (Central)
Age: 22

Why He's Here: .444/.545/1.222 (8-for-18), 6 R, 1 3B, 4 HR, 7 RBIs, 4 BB, 3 SO

The Scoop: Lee ranked 179th on the BA 500 when the Astros surprised the industry by taking him with their first-round pick at No. 32 overall in 2019. Maybe the Astros were on to something. Lee hit .330/.397/.459 through 29 games at High-A Asheville, and since getting promoted to Double-A, he has been even better. Through his first 11 games in Double-A, Lee is hitting .341/.413/.829 with five walks, five strikeouts and six home runs, with four of those homers coming over the past week. Lee also has a plus arm that has helped him shut down the running game this year, throwing out 10 of 23 basestealers (43%). (BB)

9. Hunter Brown, RHP, Astros
Team: Double-A Corpus Christi (Central)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 6 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 SO

The Scoop: Brown’s stuff has impressed since the Astros drafted him in the fifth round out of Wayne State in 2019, but his command and control have often drawn 30 grades from evaluators on the 20-to-80 scouting scale. He hasn’t exactly repudiated that assessment with 5.9 walks per nine innings this season, but he showed how dominant he is when throwing strikes on June 24. Brown pitched six shutout innings against Amarillo and struck out eight consecutive batters at one point. The outing lowered his ERA from an ugly 6.20 to a more palatable 4.99. (KG)

TOP 100 RISERS

Hunter Greene, RHP, Reds

It’s been the development of Greene’s slider that has helped him take a big step forward in 2021. Greene is the hardest throwing starting pitcher in the minors, and one of the hardest throwing starting pitchers ever. During the 2021 season, Jacob deGrom is the only MLB starting pitcher to have thrown more than 30 pitches at 100 mph or harder. Greene threw 72 100-plus mph fastballs in his first three Triple-A starts. But Greene’s fastball has always been somewhat straight and his clean delivery means hitters pick it up well. His ability to pair it with a hard slider that he can throw for strikes or bury down and away to righthanded hitters has given batters a much tougher challenge.

NEXT UP

Taj Bradley, RHP, Rays

Bradley only turned 20 just before the 2021 season began, even though he is a 2018 draftee. Over the 2020 layoff, he continued to get stronger. As he’s filled out and matured, his stuff has come along for the ride. He sat 90-92 mph coming out of high school. Now he can touch 97-98 mph with his fastball. But it’s the development of his hard 88-89 mph slider/cutter that has given Low-A hitters fits. Bradley hasn’t had a breaking ball to rely on before this season. With an improved breaking ball and above-average control of his fastball, Bradley gives the Rays yet another well-regarded starting pitching prospect.

Braves: Shea Langeliers, C (MLB No. 56), Double-A Mississippi
After homering on Monday night, Langeliers left the yard twice on Tuesday as part of a seven-homer barrage for Mississippi. The backstop started his night 0-for-3 with a pair of strikeouts before swatting solo shots to right-center in the seventh inning and to center in the ninth. It was the first multihomer game for Langeliers since he hammered three solo shots as part of a four-hit performance on June 2 at Pensacola.

Marlins: Kyle Nicolas, RHP (No. 15), Double-A Pensacola
Nicolas made quite the impression during his first Double-A start. The 22-year-old was unhittable for the Blue Wahoos in five innings against Mississippi, striking out eight and walking four in the process. Nicolas improved his already impressive strikeout numbers from High-A Beloit, where he struck out 86 batters in just under 60 innings and now has a K/9 of 13.2 across both levels.

Twins: Matt Wallner, OF (No. 11), High-A Cedar Rapids
Wallner sent two over the wall against Wisconsin, as the 6-foot-5 outfielder collected three extra-base hits on the night. He started his night with a double and his first homer came in the third to make it a 3-0 ballgame. His second came after the Timber Rattlers tried to stage a late comeback, putting the nail in the coffin in the 5-2 win. Wallner is now hitting .341 with eight homers and a 1.103 OPS on the year.

Rays: Taj Bradley, RHP (No. 17), Low-A Charleston
Bradley continued his streak of allowing three runs or fewer as he tossed five no-hit innings on Thursday, striking out eight and walking two. Bradley gave up five runs in two of his first three outings to start the 2021 season, but since then, the 20-year-old has allowed just seven runs (five earned) in 12 starts. It’s his third straight scoreless outing and his first of the season without allowing a hit. The 2018 fifth-rounder lowered his ERA to 1.76 and has amassed 81 strikeouts in 66 2/3 innings.

Braves: Braves: Drew Waters, OF (MLB No. 25), Triple-A Gwinnett
Waters tallied his third four-hit game of the year, hitting three singles, a double and scoring two runs in Gwinnett’s 8-7 loss. The Braves’ No. 2 prospect has amassed eight multihit games in July and has recorded hits in eight of his past 10 games, giving him a .319/.366/.617 slash line with five homers and 17 RBIs this month.

Pirates: Liover Peguero, SS (No. 4), High-A Greensboro
Peguero led the way offensively for the Grasshoppers with a three-hit night hitting out of the five-spot. The shortstop drove in five and slugged his eighth jack of the year, a solo shot in the fourth inning. The 20-year-old has connected on a home run in two straight games and is riding a five-game hitting streak. On the season, Peguero is slashing .253/.314/.416 for a .730 OPS. He has 10 doubles, eight homers and 16 steals, showing a coveted power and speed combo at a premier defensive position.

Marlins: Kameron Misner, OF (No. 13), High-A Beloit
Misner joined the scoring party a little late for Beloit, but nonetheless, the 23-year-old notched the first multihomer game of his career on a 2-for-4, two-RBI night. His first homer came in the fourth with the Snappers already leading 7-1. In his next at-bat, in the sixth, he drove the first pitch he saw over the fence to extend Beloit’s lead to 9-2. Misner now has eight home runs and 32 RBIs on the season.

Pirates: Liover Peguero, SS (No. 4), High-A Greensboro
Peguero scored four runs while driving in two in Greensboro’s win. The 20-year-old launched his ninth homer of the season, a two-run shot in the eighth that extended the Grasshoppers’ lead to 11-7, and finished a triple shy of the cycle in his 3-for-4 performance. Through 57 games, Peguero is batting .262 with 28 RBIs, 20 walks and 11 doubles.

Astros: Hunter Brown, RHP (No. 3), Triple-A Sugar Land
Brown twirled six one-run innings in his Triple-A debut, giving up just three hits and walking one while racking up seven strikeouts. The 22-year-old has surrendered two or fewer runs in seven consecutive starts, including one run or less six times. Brown’s seven punchouts pushed his season total to 83 in 55 1/3 innings, an average of 13.5 per nine. His hot stretch has lowered his ERA from 6.20 on June 18 to 3.74.

Pirates: Liover Peguero, SS (No. 4), High-A Greensboro
Pegeuro has been on a power kick lately. The 20-year-old has launched five homers in his last four games, capped off by a two-homer performance on Sunday, his second such effort of the season. Peguero drove in four runs and added a walk to his 2-for-4 day, giving him a career-high 32 RBIs on the season to go with 11 home runs, 17 stolen bases and a .266 batting average.

1. Liover Peguero, SS, Pirates
Team: High-A Greensboro (East)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .423/.464/1.038 (11-for-26), 9 R, 1 2B, 0 3B, 5 HR, 12 RBIs, 2 BB, 7 SO

The Scoop: Peguero has run hot and cold this season, and he was scalding this past week in a series against rival Winston-Salem. At his best, Peguero is an electric, twitchy bundle of talent who can make highlight plays on both sides of the ball. His five home runs this week are nearly half of his season total and included his second multi-homer game of the year. He and double play partner Nick Gonzales are both Top 100 prospects and stand at the top of an enviable collection of middle-diamond talent in a replenished Pittsburgh system. (JN)

Gilberto Jimenez and Nick Yorke, Low-A Salem (Red Sox)—Jimenez and Yorke combined for six hits in 10 at-bats, two doubles, three runs scored and three RBIs in a blowout win over Lynchburg. Jimenez and Yorke have formed a formidable duo at the top of Salem's lineup, each boasting a .300 or better average. Jimenez is hitting .300/.339/.388 with 17 extra-base hits and 11 stolen bases. Yorke, the team's 2020 first-round pick, has looked like the hitter the Red Sox thought they were drafting. He's hitting .304/.389/.418 with 18 extra-base hits and 10 stolen bases.

Gilberto Jimenez, Low-A Salem (Red Sox) — One of the most exciting prospects in the Red Sox's system, Jimenez ranked No. 10 in the recently updated Boston Top 30 prospects list. He's a speedy outfielder who makes plenty of contact and can stick in center field, and on Wednesday he went 5-for-5 with a pair of doubles in his team's loss to Lynchburg. The effort marked Jimenez's first career five-hit game.

https://www.baseballamerica.com/stories ... st-5-2021/

Peyton Burdick, OF (No. 11), Double-A Pensacola
Burdick went 3-for-4 with two homers and two RBIs for the Blue Wahoos. The 24-year-old’s multihomer night was his second of the season. Burdick has belted 17 homers and driven in 39 runs in 78 games in Double-A, but he's batting .207 in that span. He batted .308 in 69 games during his ‘19 season split between Low-A and High-A.

Red Sox: Gilberto Jimenez, OF (No. 4), Low-A Salem
Jimenez had a perfect day at the dish, collecting two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored as part of a 5-for-5 performance. The 21-year-old is coming off a three-hit game on Tuesday and has tallied at least one hit -- including four multihit efforts -- in nine of his past 10 contests. He’s slashing a red-hot .425/.455/.575 in that span with four doubles and eight RBIs.

If there's a snapshot of what a dominant start looks like, the Reds' Hunter Greene provided one on Thursday night.

MLB's No. 53 overall prospect was nearly unhittable, fanning 10 over 6 1/3 one-hit innings as Triple-A Louisville edged St. Paul, 1-0, at CHS Field. Featuring his usual triple-digit heat, Greene notched his third double-digit strikeout game of the season and first since his promotion to the Bats on June 15.

https://www.mlb.com/news/reds-hunter-gr ... e-coverage

Reds: Hunter Greene, RHP (MLB No. 53), Triple-A Louisville
Greene was just about unhittable in his ninth outing for Louisville. The righty allowed only one hit (the first time he’s done so this season), one walk and also hit a batter while striking out 10 across 6 1/3 innings. It’s the third time this season Greene has reached the double-digit strikeout mark -- the first time he’s done so for the Bats -- as he tossed 57 of his 80 pitches for strikes. He allowed a walk in the second, but was hitless through three before he gave up a leadoff single on the first pitch of the fourth inning. The only other baserunner he allowed came in the sixth on a two-out hit-by-pitch. Greene now owns a 3.63 ERA with 60 punchouts in 44 2/3 Triple-A innings this season.

Rays: Taj Bradley, RHP (No. 16) High-A Bowling Green
In his first outing for Bowling Green, Bradley threw five scoreless innings, allowed two hits, two walks and struck out four. The scoreless performance makes it the 20-year-old’s fourth straight outing without giving up a run. Prior to his Aug. 3 promotion from Low-A Charleston, Bradley had a 1.76 ERA in 66 2/3 innings and led the Low-A East in ERA, wins (9) and WHIP (0.86).

Brewers: Antoine Kelly, LHP (No. 6), Low-A Carolina
After a few short starts with the Mudcats, Kelly turned in his finest work of 2021 so far, going 4 2/3 innings while allowing one run. The 6-foot-6 southpaw struck out seven, marking a season high and coming just one short of his career high. He allowed five hits and walked two. Kelly has made just four starts on the year, but he has slowly been ramping up his production. Saturday night marked the first time Kelly has completed more than four innings this season.

4. Hunter Greene, RHP, Reds
Team: Triple-A Louisville (East)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: 1-0, 0.00, 1 GS, 6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 10 SO.

The Scoop: According to Synergy’s data, Greene threw 37 fastballs that were 100 mph or harder in his six scoreless innings against St. Paul on Thursday. He wasn’t over-throwing either—he threw 73% of those 100-plus mph fastballs for strikes. How rare is that? In the history of the MLB Pitch/FX and Statcast era, no pitcher has ever thrown that many 100-plus mph pitches in one outing. The MLB record is Jacob deGrom’s 33 100-plus mph pitches on June 5 of this year. That’s the only MLB game since 2008 where one pitcher has thrown 30-plus pitches over 100 mph. While it’s only happened once in the majors, this is the third time Greene has done it in Triple-A. He also had 36 100-plus mph fastballs in his July 17 start and 31 in his June 29 start. (JC)

7. Peyton Burdick, OF, Marlins
Team: Double-A Pensacola (South)
Age: 24

Why He’s Here: .480/.594/1.080 (12-for-25), 5 R, 3 2B, 4 HR, 8 RBIs, 7 BB, 5 SO

The Scoop: Burdick lost his approach earlier in the season, but he began to settle back in over the last week and showed the mix of patience and power that has long made him a favorite of both scouts and analytics personnel. Burdick was 14-for-31 with five home runs in his last 14 games with more walks (eight) than strikeouts (seven) and, notably, played an increasing amount of center field. Though he projects strictly as a corner outfielder in the major leagues, he’ll have no problem profiling there as long as he maintains the more controlled approach he’s shown in recent weeks. (KG)

Braves: Shea Langeliers, C (MLB No. 54), Double-A Mississippi
Langeliers went deep twice and collected four hits and four RBIs to pace Mississippi’s offense. The 23-year-old’s fourth multihomer game of the season produced his first long balls since his last two-homer contest on July 27. Langeliers endured a tough July but has bounced back strong this month, batting .414 with seven RBIs in seven games. The Portland, Ore., native is batting .270 with an .886 OPS, 19 homers and 42 RBIs this season.

Giants: Kyle Harrison, LHP (No. 8), Low-A San Jose
The left-hander posted his third scoreless outing of the season and first since June 18. Harrison scattered a hit and a pair of walks while fanning nine over 4 ⅔ frames. The 19-year-old whiffed four of the first five batters he faced and retired the side in order in the third. After a stretch of rough outings, Harrison appeared to regain his form as he lowered his ERA to 3.96. The eighth-ranked Giants prospect has amassed 111 strikeouts over 72 2/3 frames this season.

Marlins: Kyle Nicolas, RHP (No. 15), Double-A Pensacola
Nicolas continued a terrific run of pitching since his promotion to Double-A in late July. Despite walking four, the 22-year-old surrendered one hit and struck out eight in five shutout innings, his second scoreless effort in three starts with Pensacola. Drafted 61st overall in the 2020 Draft, Nicolas has allowed three runs in his last four starts overall to lower his ERA from 5.28 to 4.46. The right-hander has fanned 108 in 74 2/3 innings in 16 outings, including 15 starts across two levels.

Shea Langeliers is about as locked in as you can get at the plate. The Braves' No. 3 prospect per MLB Pipeline, and No. 54 overall, launched a pair of home runs as part of a four-hit effort to help lead Double-A Mississippi to an 8-2 victory over Biloxi on Tuesday night.
.
.
.
Drafted as a defense-first catcher with a tremendous throwing arm, his bat is quickly catching up. With more nights like he had Tuesday, Langeliers could become quite the all-around backstop by the time he debuts in the Majors.

Red Sox: Triston Casas, 1B (MLB No. 27), Double-A Portland
Casas extended his hitting streak to six games with his first three-hit performance since May 12. The 21-year-old stroked a pair of doubles, singled and drove in three runs to aid in Portland’s 14-hit attack. Appearing in his seventh game since helping Team USA win a silver medal in the Olympics, Casas is batting .279 with a .786 OPS, 15 extra-base hits and 35 RBIs in 197 at-bats.

Marlins: Kyle Nicolas, RHP, (No. 15), Double-A Pensacola
Nicolas continued to shine since his promotion to Double-A, twirling his third scoreless outing in four starts. The 22-year-old struck out seven and worked around four walks and three hits to lower his ERA with the Blue Wahoos to 0.90. Overall, Nicolas is 5-2 with a 4.18 ERA, a 1.27 WHIP and 115 strikeouts in 79 2/3 innings across 17 appearances, including 16 starts with High-A Beloit and Pensacola.

Dodgers: Brandon Lewis, 3B, (No. 25), High-A Great Lakes
For the third time this season, Brandon Lewis twice left the building, smacking two home runs on Saturday and driving in three of Great Lakes’ 12 runs. Lewis’ three runs scored matched a season-high as well. Lewis is certainly capable of hitting home runs in bunches; earlier this season, he smacked four home runs in just six games

Phillies: Luis Garcia, SS (No. 9), Low-A Clearwater
Garcia blasted two extra-base hits in the form of a home run -- his eighth of the year -- and a double on an eventful 5-for-6 day at the plate in Clearwater’s 22-5 thrashing of Bradenton. It’s the first five-hit effort of Garcia’s career and the first time all season he’s recorded more than three hits in a game. The 20-year-old added a walk, an RBI and three runs scored to his loaded day, bringing his average up from .210 to .223 in a single day.

Marlins: Kyle Nicolas, RHP (No. 17), Double-A Pensacola
In his fourth appearance in Double-A, Nicolas had his most effective outing yet. The 22-year-old threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, allowed three hits and struck out five batters in Pensacola’s 1-0 win over Mississippi. The scoreless performance marked the third straight scoreless outing of five innings or more for Nicolas. In his first four games since moving to Double-A, Nicolas has a 0.68 ERA across 26 2/3 innings and has a 0.90 WHIP.

Reds: Hunter Greene, RHP (MLB No. 27), Triple-A Louisville
Greene wasn’t as purely dominant as he has been in past starts, but he still put together another quality outing. The flamethrower shook off his worst outing with Louisville to allow no runs and only two hits across five innings with three strikeouts. Greene initially struggled upon being called up to Louisville, but he has gotten acclimated just fine in recent weeks. Over his past seven starts, Greene has a 2.57 ERA across 35 innings with 44 strikeouts (11.3 K/9).

Phillies: Luis Garcia, SS (No. 9), Low-A Clearwater
Garcia had himself a busy day at the plate in Clearwater’s doubleheader sweep of Tampa. Across both games, the middle infielder went a combined 4-for-8 with two singles, a triple, a homer and six RBIs. Down 4-1 in the sixth in Game 1, the 20-year-old smacked a ball into right and legged out a triple to bring his team within one. After Clearwater took the lead one batter later, Garcia provided some insurance in the seventh with his ninth homer of the year to make it a 6-4 contest. In Game 2, Garcia drove in three on two singles and added a walk in the Threshers’ 13-6 rout. He is slashing .302/.348/.558 in the past 10 games.

Peguero, hitting leadoff, was a catalyst for Greensboro’s 12-run offensive onslaught with a three-hit night, including his 13th homer of the season. The 20-year-old drove in three runs and scored two. Peguero has played his entire season for Greensboro, hitting .259/.313/.431 with a .744 OPS. The Dominican has smacked 14 doubles and has shown off his speed with 19 steals. Peguero has sacrificed contact for more power this year, but has struggled to get on base enough to supplement the change in hitting philosophy, although his combination of power, speed and defense at a middle infield position is a coveted skillset.

Royals: Kyle Isbel, OF (No. 6), Triple-A Omaha
Isbel smacked two extra-base hits, including his 11th homer of the year, and finished a triple shy of the cycle on a 3-for-4 day in Omaha’s 7-1 win. The 24-year-old scored two runs and drove in two, bringing his season RBI total to a career-best 47, surpassing his previous mark of 32 he set in his debut season in 2018. It’s his second game of the season with multiple extra-base hits and Isbel is now batting .265/.360/.427 with 17 doubles and 21 stolen bases in 92 games.

Rays: Taj Bradley, RHP (No. 6), High-A Bowling Green
Since being promoted to the Rays’ High-A affiliate, Bradley has tossed five innings in each of his previous four starts. On Sunday, the righty continued the trend. The Rays’ No. 6 prospect went five innings and fanned six, earning a no-decision in the 5-3 loss. This was the second time this month that the right-hander shut out an opponent in five frames. In his fifth start for the Hot Rods, he threw 52 pitches, 34 for strikes. He retired the final 10 batters after allowing his only hit -- a single in the top of the second inning.

4. Luis Garcia, SS, Phillies
Team: Low-A Clearwater (Southeast)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: .444/.516/.963 (12-for-27), 7 R, 1 2B, 2 3B, 3 HR, 13 RBIs, 4 BB, 5 SO

The Scoop: Garcia had a disastrous stint at Low-A in 2019, hitting .186 in 127 games, and wasn’t much better to start the 2021 season. He bottomed out in July with a .197 average before the team missed over a week of play after a coronavirus outbreak. He’s started to heat up this month and had his best week of the season, with three homers and 13 RBIs over a seven-game span. The 20-year-old shortstop added 20 pounds of muscle to his frame, and it’s translated to career-best totals in doubles (15), triples (five) and home runs (11). (CHT)

9. Taj Bradley, RHP, Rays
Team: High-A Bowling Green (East)
Age: 20

Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.90, 2 GS, 10 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 10 SO

The Scoop: Few minor league pitchers have taken a bigger leap forward this season than Bradley, who jumped from No. 21 on the Rays preseason Top 30 Prospects list to No. 6 in the midseason edition. The 20-year-old righthander continues to improve his velocity, regularly sitting in the mid 90s while showing more consistency throwing strikes and lowering his walks per nine innings to a career-best 2.5. Bradley has pitched well since being promoted to High-A on Aug. 3, throwing five innings in each start. In the last week he struck out 10 and walked one while getting 23 swinging strikes in two starts against Rome. (CHT

15. Liover Peguero, SS, Pirates
Team: High-A Greensboro (East)
Age: 20

Why He's Here: .333/.394/.667 (10-for-30), 7 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 7 RBIs, 3 BB, 7 SO, 0-for-1 SB

The Scoop: Peguero is hitting .279/.326/.500 in 20 games in August, bringing his line up to .266/.324/.455 for the season. The 25% strikeout rate is still on the higher side, as Peguero has an aggressive approach he will have to reign in more as he moves up the ladder, but he's an athletic player who fits in the middle of the field who drives the ball with impact when he does connect.
