We have reached the Elite 8 of our Greatest of All Time Tournament Bracket and as you can see, the underdog is alive and well.

In the only region to play out like things were supposed to, we have the undefeated 1927 Yankees against the 2016 Cubs. The Yankees have had a walk in the park, sweeping the 84 Padres, 01 DBacks and 04 Red Sox. The Cubs have two games, sweeping the 82 Brewers and taking 5 games to beat the 1908 Pirates and 1953 Dodgers.

Prediction: Yankees in 6. The Cubs bats will win them a couple of games but Murderer's Row won't be stopped here

Cleveland was the lowest seed to reach the Sweet 16 in this region and they were a 7, so this region was absolute chaos. The Indians swept the 1919 Reds and 1942 Cardinals before beating the 1980 Phillies in 6 games. They'll go up against the 13 seed 1990 Pirates. Pittsburgh has swept the 2001 Mariners, then beat the 1990 A's in six games and the 1992 Jays in five games.

Prediction: Pirates in 6. The first 6 spots in the Pirates order is pretty dangerous and Doug Drabek has been great the entire tournament. Going with the hot hand.

The 1997 Mariners may have been underseeded as a 13, but they've got 3 Hall of Famers in their lineup and one as their ace. They beat the 65 Twins in 5 games in the first round, then the 05 White Sox in 5 in round 2 and beat the 2019 Twins in 6 last round. The 1998 Yankees, the 2 seed, have struggled most of the tournament. They beat the 2011 Brewers in 5 after trailing 2 games to 1, the 1971 Pirates took them to 7 games, but they made easy work of the 93 Phillies in 5 games.

Prediction: Mariners in 6. Yankees have under performed most of the tournament and the M's are hot. ARod/Buhner/Junior/Edgar carries the M's to the Final 4

The 1994 Expos, a fan favorite going into the tournament, had to take 5 games to beat the 84 Cubs in round 1. They then swept the 85 Blue Jays and took down Earl Weaver's 1970 Orioles in 6 games. They'll face the ultimate underdogs, the 2009 Colorado Rockies. The Rocks beat the 84 Tigers in 4, swept the 86 Red Sox and beat the 2017 Indians in 6.

Prediction: Rockies in 7. The wild ride continues. One thing that'll hurt Colorado is not getting Seth Smith in the lineup at DH for a few games, but the lineup is dangerous and the pitching is just good enough.

Elite 8 Game 1

Anthony Rizzo brought home Dexter Fowler in the top of the first with a double to give the Cubs a 1-0 lead. Tony Lazzeri scored on a double play in the 2nd to tie things for New York, but the tie wasn't for long. Addison Russell continued to pound the ball like it was his wife, driving in Ben Zobrist in the 4th. Murderer's Row woke up in the 5th, with Bob Meusel and Lou Gehrig each hitting two run home runs to make it 5-2. The Cubs would score one more time before the game was over but the Yankees remained undefeated with a 5-3 win. Waite Hoyt went the distance.

The Indians and Twins were locked in a 1-1 tie in the 7th inning when the Pirates took the lead on a bases loaded walk to Bobby Bonilla by Bob Feller with two outs. Andy Van Slyke grounded out to end the inning before any more damage could be done. The Pirates loaded the bases with two outs in the 8th and scored again on a free pass to take a 3-1 lead, this time with Van Slyke drawing the walk. Jim Leyland left Doug Drabek in to try for the complete game but he allowed singles to Joe Gordon and Larry Doby to start the inning. Allie Clark grounded out and Eddie Robinson flew out for the first two outs. Then Jim Hegan doubled into the left field corner to score Gordon and Doby to tie the game. Stan Belinda came on for the third out but to extras we go. In the 12th, the Pirates scored on a Wally Backman triple to bring in Sid Bream, then Backman scored on a Jose Lind triple. Leyland turned to Bill Landrum for the save and he allowed a pair of singles while getting the first two outs. Lou Boudreau then singled home a run to make it 5-4 and Leyland called for Scott Ruskin to get the last out. He walked Ken Keltner to load the bases, then lined a hard single to left to tie the game. Larry Doby followed with a walk off walk to win the game.

The Seattle defense holds New York to three field goals and scores a pair of touchdowns in a 17-9 win. David Cone got pounded for 9 runs in 1 2/3 innings. Junior, Paul Sorrento and Russ Davis all went yard and Jose Cruz had 5 RBI as the M's survived Randy Johnson allowing 6 runs in 6 innings. The Yankees managed to cut the lead to 10-7 in the bottom of the 8th on a Posada homer, but the M's scored a touchdown in insurance runs in the top of the 9th to prevent any late game heroics.

A Dexter Fowler error allowed the Expos to jump ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first. Colorado tied it in the 3rd when Clint Barmes doubled in Chris Ianetta. Sean Berry homered in the 4th to make it 2-1 Expos. Brad Hawpe doubled in Todd Helton to tie it up in the 6th. Sean Berry led off the bottom of the 6th being hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on a Darrin Fletcher single. In the 7th, Fowler atoned for his error with a two run shot off Mel Rojas to give the Rockies the lead. That lead would be short lived, as Wil Cordero smacked a two out, two run homer to give the Expos a 5-4 lead. Jeff Shaw allowed a leadoff 8th inning double to Ian Stewart, but then got 2 outs before pinch hitter Matt Murton rolled one up the third base line that stayed fair to put runners at the corners with two outs. Fowler struck again, lining a single to left center to tie it. Tim Scott came in to face Carlos Gonzalez, but CarGo doubled to right to score Murton and Fowler to make it 7-5. The Expos got two on to start the 8th, but Cliff Floyd struck out and Lenny Webster GIDP to end the threat. Houston Street retired the side in order in the 9th for the save.

Sid Bream then singled through the hole into right field to make it 4-3. Lemon got Wally Backman to ground out to first to get out of the inning. Lemon went back out to start the 9th with a one run lead and Slaught greeted him with a double off the center field wall. Bonds grounded to second to advance the runner. Bobby Bonilla followed with a line drive to right that just cleared the wall to give Pittsburgh a one run lead. Following singles by Van Slyke and Bream, Wally Backman hit a fly ball to right that landed three rows deep in the bleachers for an 8-4 lead. Cleveland would mount a 2 out rally in the 9th, scoring when Ken Keltner singled home Lou Boudreau. Larry Doby would come to bat as the tying run but grounded out to Jay Bell.

Seattle's kicker misses an extra point and their D keeps New York out of the end zone again with a 20-9 victory. David Wells was pounded for 8 runs in the first 4 innings thanks in part to 3 run blasts by Jay Buhner and Jose Cruz. The Yankees would cut the lead to 9-4 in the 7th thanks to a Griffey error. Two bases loaded singles and a bases loaded double made it 16-4 after the top of the 8th. A 5 run bottom of the 8th was answered by a 4 run top of the 9th for the 20-9 final.

A bases loaded walk and a single by Darrin Fletcher gave Pedro Martinez a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Carlos Gonzalez doubled home Dexter Fowler in the 3rd to make it 3-1. Chris Ianetta doubled home Tulo in the 4th cut the lead to a run. Todd Helton turned on a Pedro slider in the 5th for a two run shot to give Colorado a 4-3 lead. A six run explosion in the 7th put the Rocks ahead 10-3. Fletcher and Larry Walker would homer before Montreal gave in, but the Rockies won 10-6 to take a 2-0 load back to Coors Field.

Then Keltner struck again, hitting a line drive that barely cleared the center field wall to make it 3-1. A one out Jay Bell walk was all the offense the Pirates could muster as the Indians tied the series.

Colorado loaded the bases in the 3rd with one out, but Tulo lined out and Ian Stewart grounded out to end the threat. The 27 Yankees advance with a 12-5 win over the Cubs. The Cubs jumped out to a 3-0 first inning lead and Jon Lester tossed 5 shutout innings before the Yankee bats woke up for a 6 run 6th inning that culminated in a two run Babe Ruth homer off Hector Rondon. Chicago cut the lead to one in the 7th, then the Yankees added two in the 8th on a Max Gazella single and four in the 9th in large part to a three run homer by Gehrig.

Doug Drabek and Bob Feller locked horns in another pitcher's duel. Barry Bonds scored on a bases loaded groundout by Wally Backman in the 6th for the first run of the game. Drabek helped his own cause in the 7th with a solo homer to right that had Three River's rocking. A two run double by Backman in the 8th made it 4-0, which was the final score. Drabek tossed a three hit shutout to give Pittsburgh a 3-2 lead heading back to Cleveland.

Tomorrow is my wife's birthday so doing Game 6 now.

Andy Van Slyke's line drive single to left center gave the Pirates a 1-0 advantage in the top of the first. A Wally Backman triple scored Van Slyke in the 4th and Backman came home on a Jose Lind single to make it 3-0. Van Slyke drove on Don Slaught and Barry Bonds with a single, then scored later on in the inning when Lou Boudreau booted a Wally Backman grounder to make it 6-0. Bonilla added an insurance run in the 7th to make it 7-0. Neal Heaton came out after tossing 7 shutout innings for the Pirates, allowing 8 hits and walking two. Joe Gordon homered off Zane Smith to get the Tribe on the board in the 8th but no further damage was done. Cleveland got a run in the 9th but with two on and two out, the rally ended as Joe Gordon popped out to Jose Lind, as the Pirates became the second 13 seed to reach the promised land.

Brad Hawpe dropped a routine fly ball by Moises Alou in the first inning and Alou scored on a two out single to left by Sean Berry. Larry Walker led off the fifth with a single and stole second, then scored on a Sean Berry single to make it 2-0. Pedro Martinez showed us a glimpse of what he would become, tossing 7 shutout innings and striking out twelve. John Wetteland came in to pitch the 9th after a scoreless 8th from Mel Rojas. A two out walk to Chris Ianetta brought the tying run to the plate, but Clint Barmes took strike 3 called to end it. Expos win 2-0 to force Game 7 on Sunday after trailing 3 games to 1.

Elite 8 Game 7

This game deserves one of those opening promos that NBC used to do during the NBA playoffs with Bob Costas or Tom Hammond narrating. In a tournament filled with upsets and Cinderellas, nobody saw a slipper fitting so well on the foot of the 2009 Colorado Rockies. Certainly not Sparky Anderson's 1984 Tigers. The 1986 Red Sox were next, then the 2017 Cleveland Indians. But the last dance has belonged to the 1994 Montreal Expos, waltzing their way back from a 3-1 deficit. The best team in baseball denied their shot at immortality by the player's strike, then ripped from their city by the worst ownership in sports. Looking to rewrite history, Moises Alou, Larry Walker and the Expos hope to continue to be the belle of the ball. Only one can advance. Who does the clock strike midnight for tonight in Montreal? Game 7 next. NBA ON NBC THEME

Aaron Cook and Jeff Fassero take the mound for their squads in game seven. Sean Berry would walk in the second and score on a two out Cliff Floyd single to stake the Expos to a 1-0 lead. Aaron Cook lined a two out single to left in the third. Dexter Fowler followed with a triple to score Cook. Sean Berry led off the 4th with a solo shot to center field to regain the lead for the Expos, 2-1. Darrin Fletcher led off the 6th with a triple. Cliff Floyd drove him home on a ground ball single to third that Ian Stewart made a diving stop on but had no play at any base. Fassero bunted Floyd to second and he would score on a two out single by Marquis Grisson to give the Expos a 4-1 lead after 6 innings, as Fassero had shut down the Rockies allowing only two hits. Brad Hawpe led off the 7th with a walk and Tulo followed with a groundball just past a diving Mike Lansing for a single. Ian Stewart flew out just shy of the track in center, allowing Hawpe to go to third. Chris Ianetta popped out to Cliff Floyd in foul territory. With two away, Carlos Gonzalez lined one into the gap that two hopped the wall, scoring Hawpe and Tulo to make it a one run game. Seth Smith would pinch hit for Franklin Morales and strike out looking to end the inning, with the score being 4-3. Mel Rojas came on in relief of Fassero to pitch the 8th. Fowler led off by hitting a ball six feet and Fletcher easily threw him out. Clint Barmes blooped one to left center for a single. Todd Helton followed with a ground ball up the middle that sent Barmes to third. Hawpe followed with a ground ball out of the reach of Wil Cordero to tie the game and send Helton to third with the go ahead run. Tulo would smash a hard ground ball past a diving Sean Berry to score Helton and send Hawpe to third. Ian Stewart then flew out to the track in left to make it a 6-4 game after Hawpe tagged and scored without a throw. Darrin Fletcher singled to center to lead off the 8th. He would be erased on a fielder's choice and replaced at first by Mike Lansing. Cliff Floyd then hit a can of corn to center for the second out. Rondell White would pinch hit and Clint Hurdle brought in Josh Fogg to replace Manny Corpas. White grounded one up the middle to put runners at the corners with two away. Fogg caught Grissom looking with a backdoor breaking ball to get out of the jam. Huston Street came on in the 9th to try and close out the game for the Rockies. Alou struck out on a fastball at his chin. Larry Walker bounced one to Helton for the second out. Wil Cordero kept the game alive with a single to left. Sean Berry, the Expos MVP of the tournament, following with a hard ground ball to right center to send Cordero to third. Darrin Fletcher sat first pitch fastball and smoked a line drive up the middle that Huston Street managed to snare for the third out and the save. The Rockies dog piled on the mound at Olympic Stadium to put an end to baseball in Montreal and advanced to the Final Four.
