Raffy's Roids Region

The Rangers bats kept them alive, pounding Jimmy Key for a 12-2 win. Texas played home run derby as Juan Gonzalez went deep twice and Pudge, Rusty Greer, Todd Zeile and Raffy all went deep once.

Doug Drabek and Dave Stewart locked horns in a pitcher's duel for the ages. Jose Canseco beat out a double play ground ball to score Carney Lansford in the top of the first. That was all the scoring as the A's pushed the series back to Oakland. Drabek allowed three hits in nine innings, but two of them were back to back in the first inning. Dave Stewart tossed a four hit shutout. The Pirates did muster a rally attempt in the 9th, with a Bobby Bonilla walk and an Andy Van Slyke single, but Sid Bream lined out to 2nd to end the game.

Dick Ruthven allows one run in a complete game win and the Phillies advance, 3-1. Bake McBride led off the 7th with a home run and Keith Moreland drove home two on a double later in the inning for a 3-0 lead. An RBI groundout in the 8th was all the offense the Angels could muster.

MGM Resorts Presents the Pete Rose Region

With their backs to the wall, the Reds walloped the Twins 10-1. Don Gullett threw 7 innings of one run ball and Johnny Bench went deep twice.

The offense of the 97 Mariners was too much for Mark Buehrle to handle as the M's advanced with an 8-5 win. Paul Sorrento first inning homer and four RBI led the way, Junior also homered and Randy Johnson struck out 16 in 9 innings despite giving up 5 runs.

A two out single by Daniel Murphy gave the Mets a 4-1 lead in the 5th. An 8th inning solo blast by Darren Daulton cut the lead to 4-2. Familia came in for the save and allowed three straight singles to Eisenreich, Mariano Duncan and Ricky Jordan to make it 4-3. Lenny Dykstra followed with a three run blast to left center to give Philly a 6-4 lead. In the 9th, Mitch Williams walked Kelly Johnson to lead the inning off and David Wright beat out a slow roller to short, but Cespedes K'd looking to end things. Philly advances, Kruk goes on Letterman, a truck of Budweiser disappears and a generation of Philly youngsters suffers from oral cancer due to increased use of chewing tobacco.

Willie Stargell's first inning solo shot was all the offense the Pirates could muster as the Yankees took a 3-2 series lead with a 6-1 victory. A Tino Martinez double tied it in the 6th and Chuck Knoblauch put the Yanks ahead with a 2 run shot in the 7th. Three insurance runs would be more than enough. David Wells got the win with 6 innings of one run ball

Ruth Region Game 6

Boston advances 4-3 over Atlanta. A Big Papi ground rule double in the 5th gave Boston a 3-1 lead, but Atlanta would chip away. Andruw Jones scored Michael Tucker on a triple in the 6th but the Braves squandered Jones at 3rd with nobody out and couldn't get him home. A Walt Weiss 8th inning double would tie the game. Trot Nixon led off the bottom of the 8th and scored from first on a Texas League double from Varitek. A two out 9th inning double from Ozzie Guillen gave the Braves a chance, but Andruw Jones struck out to end the series.

In an epic back and forth duel, the Brooklyn Dodgers defeated the 93 Giants 9-8 to advance. Barry Bonds had a 2 run shot in the first, but the Dodgers answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a Roy Campanella single. Bonds led off the 3rd with a solo home run to give SF the lead again. Billy Cox answered in the bottom of the inning with a 3 run blast to give the Dodgers a 5-3 lead. Bonds and Matt Williams went back to back to lead off the 5th, and a Duke Snider error allowed Robby Thompson to score with two outs to give SF a 6-5 lead. Campy led off the bottom of the inning with a solo homer to tie things at 6. Carl Furillo smashed a two run tater in the 7th to put Brooklyn ahead 8-6. A bases loaded Kurt Manwaring single scored Thompson and Willie McGee to tie things in the top of the 9th. In the bottom of the inning, following two singles, Billy Cox grounded a single through the hole to left field to score Campanella from 3rd and win the game.

Raffy's Roids Region

The Cinderella run of the 1999 Texas Rangers ends a Skydome with a 10-3 loss to the 92 Jays. David Cone went 6 for the win, Joe Carter and Candy Maldonado went deep and a young Jeff Kent had 3 RBI in a start at 3rd base.

The Pirates win the alternate universe version of the 1990 World Series with an 8-3 win over Oakland. Andy Van Slyke had two homers, Bonds and Jay Bell also left the yard. Oakland had the bases loaded with two outs in the 9th, but Van Slyke's diving catch in left center off the bat of Jose Canseco finished things for Pittsburgh.

Big Red can't wash down a Twinkie! The Twins knock out the Big Red Machine with a 7-4, 11 inning victory in Game 6. George Foster tied things up at 3 in the 6th with a two run homer. The Reds would take the lead in the 7th on an RBI groundout by Joe Morgan. With two outs in the 9th, Miguel Sano hit his second home run of the day to tie things up, crushing one to center off Rawley Eastwick. The Reds loaded the bases with 2 out in the 10th, but Devin Smeltzer struck out Caesar Geronimo looking to get out of the jam. In the 11th, the Twins got 3 on singles by Eddie Rosario and Schoop and a sac fly by CJ Cron. The Reds got a pair of two out hits, but Foster grounded out to Sano to end the game and eliminate the Reds.

The 71 Pirates force the only Game 7 of the second round with a 6-3 win over the 98 Yankees. Willie Stargell hit a two run shot in the first, Clemente doubled home a run in the 3rd and the Pirates had a 5-0 lead through 6. Dock Ellis went 8 and allowed 3 runs for the win.

The bad news is my two favorite teams left in the tournament (Twins and Mariners) play each other. The good news, I guess, is that one of them is guaranteed to make the final 8.

Game 7

The 98 Yankees advance with a 6-3 win over the 71 Pirates. Pittsburgh jumped ahead to a 3-0 lead with a Clemente RBI single and a Richie Hebner two run homer in the first. Tino Martinez would get Knoblauch home on a sac fly in the bottom of the first to make it 3-1. Jorge Posada tied it in the 4th with a gapper to the wall that scored two. In the bottom of the 8th, bases loaded and two out, Darryl Strawberry grounded a single to left to score two. Chad Curtis then blooped a single to left for another run to make it 6-3. Rivera allowed a leadoff single to Willie Stargell in the 9th but that's all the Pirates could muster.

I'll post the Sweet 16 bracket and a tournament recap at some point this weekend. Sweet 16 games start Monday
