64 team best of all time tournament

Post by Astros »

Since all schools are out and I have to be on my computer to answer any questions my students have all morning. On average I get one email a day. So I decided to do a 64 team tournament of some of the best teams of all time to occupy my boredom. I think this would be a good idea to pass the time in the IBC while the season is on hold. So here's my idea:

Each franchise submits 2 seasons from their franchise's history. John could do the 69 and 86 Mets, Nate could do the 95 and 07 Rockies, etc., then we seed it. First round is best of 3, second round is best of 5, Sweet 16 on are 7 game series. Since that would leave four open spots, two teams will be drawn at random from each league and get an extra team in the tournament to make it to 64. I'll do all the work and post the results. So post the teams you want.

The results of the random wild card draws to get an extra team:

AL---Twins and Angels
NL---Marlins and Pirates

If it has to be fairly modern era team the White Sox will go with the 2005 World Champs and 1983 "Winning Ugly" Western Division Champs.

After finishing second in 2004, the Sox under manager Ozzie Guillén won 99 games and the Central Division title in 2005 behind the work of stars Paul Konerko, Mark Buehrle, A. J. Pierzynski, Joe Crede, and Orlando "El Duque" Hernández. In the playoffs, they won the American League Division Series 3–0 over the defending world champion Boston Red Sox; the American League Championship Series 4–1 over the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim; and the World Series 4–0 over the Houston Astros, ending an 88-year championship drought. With their 11-1 record, the White Sox tied the 1999 New York Yankees for the best record in a single postseason.

In 1983 after the White Sox went through a winning streak around the All-Star break, Texas Rangers manager Doug Rader said the White Sox "...weren't playing well. They're winning ugly." This phrase became a rallying cry for the team under manager Tony LaRussa. Ron Kittle won the American League Rookie of the Year Award and set a club record for most home runs by a rookie with 35. He also would manage to lead the league in strikeouts with 150. LaMarr Hoyt won the American League Cy Young Award while fellow pitcher Floyd Bannister finished second in the American League in strikeouts. He also won 13 of 14 games after the All-Star Break. They lost to Balitmore 3-1 in the AL Championship Series.

If we can go old school I would substitute for the '83 squad the 1917 World Champs who dominated the American League with a record of 100–54 under manager Pants Rowland. The 100 wins is a club record that still stands. Their offense. lead by "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, Eddie Collins and Happy Felsch, was first in runs scored while their pitching staff led the league with a 2.16 ERA. Facing the New York Giants in the 1917 World Series, the team clinched the series in six games, thanks in large part to the workhorse pitching efforts of Eddie Cicotte and Red Faber.

You can pick any season in franchise history Jim so I'll go with 1917.

I'm going to choose the 1942 and 2004 Cardinals

80 and 08 Phillies. I was tempted to go 1993 Phillies since they are near and dear, but the 80 lineup is so awesome:

Pete Rose, 1B
Bake McBride, RF
Garry Maddox, CF
Mike Schmidt, 3B
Greg Luzinski, LF
Bob Boone, C
Larry Bowa, SS
Manny Trillo, 2B
Steve Carlton, P

I'm assuming it's only stats for players while they were on that team in given year -

ie:
2019 Marcus Stroman NYM ERA: 3.94 opposed to overall combined season ERA of 3.22 ??
2008-2023 Mets: 1,054-1,223...463%
2006-2008 Rockies: 242-244...498%

IBC Total: 1,296-1,467...469%
2022: lost WC
2023: lost WC

Yes, only their stats for that team, so like, Verlander has a 1.06 ERA for the 17 Astros

With a better understanding of what you are looking for, I'd like to see 'bleacher-reports' B.Egel's pick as the 2 best A's teams - 1990 & 2002.

2001 D'backs that won the WS

and, since there's not a lot else to choose from (other than teams that are nearly identical to the 2001 team)

2017 D'backs

Dave, the 01 team took the 86 Mets to 7 games in the Final Four of the tournament I'd been doing while working. You have a sleeper Cinderella

Cool - Randy Johnson should be able to put up zeroes as well as anyone.

All I have to say is that Brett Z better pick the '94 Expos!

Love the Twins team picks. Would be fun to see the 87 Twins in there, but they were actually an average team, lol.

I almost took the 2006 or 2007 Mets to right a wrong - but the pitching just sucks.
