August 23 Power Rankings

Post by Cardinals »

Contributors: Pirates

A quick power rankings done by me since they haven't been done in awhile. Enjoy.

Rankings
1. Yankees - Yankees en route to a 7th consectuive playoff appearance, an IBC record.

2. Pirates - The P stands for pitching: Pirates lead IBC in ERA (3.11) and Strikeouts (1100)

3. BlueJays - The Jays are second in the AL in runs scored to the Yankees, just like in the AL East. Up one game on the Wild Card, Toronto will need to continue to score many times in order to hang on.

4. Tigers - 14 game winning streak vaulted the Tigers into a share of first in the AL Central and now adding Furcal at SS will only help the Tigers postseason chances.

5. Royals - The Royals are 2nd in the AL in team ERA at 3.79, behind the Tigers.

6. Nationals - The Nationals have taken a fair lead in the NL East (3 games) and are 8 games up on a wild card spot.

7. Marlins - Adding AJ Burnett solidifies the Marlins rotation as well as their playoff chances.

8. Rockies - The good? The Rockies lead the NL in runs scored and lead the NL West by six games. The bad? They've lost 5 straight and are 13th in the NL in team ERA.

9. Cardinals - The Cards are still within striking distance of the NL Wild Card and a chance to defend their back to back pennants, but after dealing Furcal the improbable playoff run seems impossible.

10. Giants - San Fran is only 8 games over .500, but after sweeping the Rockies are now only six back of a playoff spot. Will Jake Peavy propel the Giants to a return to October baseball?

11. Reds - The Nate curse stays with the Reds despite Nate leaving: Now 15 back of the NL Central lead and six back of the Wild Card and losing Wright from here on out = another lost year in Cinci.

12. RedSox - Boston survived it's injuries in the early to middle part of the year, but has fallen apart since the All Star Break, going 15-20.

13. DBacks - The D'Backs are 8-2 in their last 10 and are a feasible 7.5 games behind the Rockies. Will JT try to make a move to capture a second consecutive NL West Crown, or stand pat?

14. Phillies - Philly has faded: after going 4-6 in their last 10, the Phillies are now seven behind the Marlins with only 40 games to make up the difference.

15. Athletics - The AL West gets a team in the top 15. Oakland adds Meche and Myers will be back in September bolstering the A's chances at fending off a Rangers late playoff push.

16. Astros - The Astros are 20-15 since the All Star Break, good for second best in the NL Central in that span.

17. Rangers - The Rangers are 13-9 in August, but trail Oakland by five games. Is it too little too late?

18. Twins - 2009 will be the first postseason since 2005 where the Twins are not participating.

19. Mets - The Mets injury riddled season continues as Lohse hits the DL.

20. WhiteSox - The White Sox fans will possibly suffer another disappointing sub .500 season - though this time with a new GM. If so, that would mark the 7th straight sub .500 season for the White Sox.

21. Padres - San Diego inexplicably has a 5.02 team ERA - the main factor into their sub .500 season.

22. Dodgers - The Dodgers are far removed from their 2007 playoff appearance, but hope is on the way for 2010 with Heyward, LaPorta, Martinez, Parker and others.

23. Cubs - Much like the MLB Cubs, their IBC counterparts are waiting until next year - which will prove to be better than 2009 at least in the IBC with a team anchored by Kershaw and McCutchen.

24. Orioles - Baltimore's 4.79 ERA is only better than the Angels in the AL.

25. Mariners - Seattle traded AJ Burnett and Mike Hampton the injury machine (just in time) and is taking a chance on Ben Sheets health to anchor their 2010 attack.

26. Indians - Blanks, Loney and Callaspo should anchor the 2010 offense.

27. Angels - The Angels picked up Matusz, but at the cost of McCutchen. We'll see if that proves to be wise, but a potential lefty ace is tough to pass up.

28. Braves - Prized righty Jordan Zimmerman is out for 2010. Ouch. Will 2010 be just as bad as 2009 in Atlanta?

29. Brewers - The Brewers were officially eliminated from the NL Central race this week, the first NL team to do so.

30. Rays - Tampa Bay has been eliminated from all playoff contention already - though picking #1 overall might not be so bad this year.

Nice work on these JP. I think the NL shapes up about how you have it at this point. I knew Hampton was a good bet to get dinged, but def was hoping for more than 1 start before the possible season-ending DL trip. If I'm able to find another SP (and maybe a RP) by the deadline I think a healthy Marlins lineup can make a bid to repeat as NL East champs despite the Nats' current commanding position at the top. Of course, for the div race to heat up again Ken's team would maybe have to lose the occasional game or three (WAS has won 10 of 12). With the Cook injury at least there's a chance of them slowing down. So it looks like I'm in the market for LH SP (or RH SP I guess) and CF if anyone's selling. Gio, Duke, etc avail.

2023 GM Totals: 1780 W - 1460 L | 0.549 wpct | 89-73 (avg 162 G record)
