Again, almost a strong start across the board for the Baby Nats...including a 5-spot on the BA Hot Sheet. The Dahl hot sheet didn't even include the 6-8 he already is this weekend (he's good)...

2. Daniel Robertson, ss, Rays
Team: Double-A Montgomery (Southern)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .448/.500/.724 (13-for-29), 7 R, 3 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, 9 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO

The Scoop: The primary target of January’s Ben Zobrist trade with the Athletics, Robertson is shaping up as yet another big win by the Rays’ pro scouting department. (See also: Chris Archer, Wil Myers and, well, Zobrist.) He leads the Southern League with 11 doubles, 23 runs and 28 RBIs, while hitting .313 and drawing 14 walks in 32 games. Robertson also leads SL shortstops with .977 fielding average. This is the sort of well-rounded game that projects to make him a big league contributor.

3. David Dahl, cf, Rockies
Team: Double-A New Britain (Eastern)
Age: 21
Why He’s Here: .414/.433/.759 (12-for-29), 7 R, 2 2B, 1 3B, 2 HR, 4 RBIs, 1 BB, 6 SO, 5-for-6 SB

The Scoop: Dahl spent the majority of 2014 in the hitter’s paradise that is low Class A Asheville, so the change in context to a neutral park in Double-A this season was dramatic. Sure enough, he hit .222 with four extra-base hits in April before seeing an uptick in production in May. In his past 10 games, Dahl is hitting .366 (15-for-41) with two home runs and five stolen bases, so continue to target him as an impact power/speed prospect. Ben Badler offers a report from the front lines.

14. Billy McKinney, rf, Cubs
Team: high Class A Myrtle Beach (Carolina) - got call to AA
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .458/.444/.708 (11-for-24), 5 R, 4 2B, 1 3B, 8 RBIs, 1 BB, 2 SO

The Scoop: McKinney went 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in his debut at Double-A Tennessee yesterday, and Carolina League pitchers breathed a sign of relief. The 2013 first-rounder terrorized CL pitchers during his 29 games at Myrtle Beach, leading the league in average (.340), on-base percentage (.432) and slugging (.544). McKinney manages the strike zone and has feel for the barrel, which is good because he doesn’t have the plus power (or speed) typically associated with a corner outfielder.

17. Steven Matz, lhp, Mets
Team: Triple-A Las Vegas (Pacific Coast)
Age: 24
Why He’s Here: 0-0, 0.00, 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 7 SO

The Scoop: Matz might not get the publicity of recently-promoted Vegas teammate Noah Syndergaard, but he is no less regarded than the big righthander within Mets circles. Matz fashions a mid-90s fastball, an improving curve and a change that scouts call plus. He has struck out a Pacific Coast League-leading 45 in 42 innings this season. The Mets don’t need him right now, but when they do, he’ll just add to a deep rotation.

19. Jorge Mateo, ss, Yankees
Team: low Class A Charleston (South Atlantic)
Age: 20
Why He’s Here: .409/.500/.500 (9-for-22) 3 R, 2 2B, 2 RBIs, 4 BB, 5 SO, 6-for-7 SB

The Scoop: The dynamic Dominican with top-of-the-scale speed leads all of baseball with 27 steals in 33 tries after he swiped six bags this week. The thin six-footer also has juice in his wiry body, and the ball jumps off his bat. He’s far away, but he draws comparisons with Jose Reyes, allowing Yankees fans to envision him as the starter at shortstop one day.

The IBC Nats are hot again...with a different cast of characters:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/minors/p ... r-zooms-1/

2. Grant Holmes, rhp, Dodgers
Team: low Class A Great Lakes (Midwest)
Age: 19
Why He’s Here: 2-0, 0.00, 12 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 16 SO, 4 BB

With Julio Urias on the shelf for a month after having cosmetic surgery on his left eye, Holmes is left with the title of best active Dodgers pitching prospect. A big boy with a big arm and big hair, he was a buzzsaw in two starts this week, cutting through Dayton and South Bend for six innings apiece with a total of three hits allowed—two singles and a double—on his ledger. In May, Holmes is 3-0, 0.78, with an absurd 11 hits in 23 innings. His 49 punchouts puts him just five behind the rejuvenated Stephen Gonsalves for the Midwest League lead.

11. Rob Refsnyder, 2b, Yankees
Team: Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (International)
Age: 24
Why He’s Here: .400/.483/.680 (10-for-25), 6 R, 1 2B, 2 HR, 4 RBIs, 4 BB, 4 SO, 2-for-2 SB

Based on his offensive production throughout his career—which includes 113 games at Triple-A—Refsnyder has earned a shot at the big leagues. The Yankees’ No. 7 prospect entering the season, he has shown he can hit at every level with good bat speed, hand-eye coordination and a sound sense of the strike zone. Yet scouts aren’t comfortable with Refsnyder’s defense at second base, where he lacks natural infield actions, gets his feet tied up and has made 10 errors already this season. The bat is the carrying tool for Refsnyder, but becoming a playable defender at second is the key to his future.

17. Domingo Santana, of, Astros
Team: Triple-A Fresno (Pacific Coast)
Age: 22
Why He’s Here: .417/.533/.833 (10-for-24), 7 R, 1 2B, 3 HR, 5 BIs, 6 BB, 7 SO, 0-for-1 SB

Three of the top six players in the minors in OPS play for Triple-A Fresno, with shortstop Carlos Correa checking in at No. 2, first baseman Jon Singleton one spot behind him and Santana No. 6 thanks to his .311/.415/.630 start. Given his all-or-nothing offensive game, Santana is a streaky hitter who has fanned 31 percent of the time this season and has nearly as many extra-base hits (20) as singles (22). In Santana’s favor: The Astros are one of the most forgiving organizations when it comes to accepting a high dose of strikeouts in exchange for double-plus raw power.

Good news, bad news day as Eduardo Rodriguez gets called up and drops the funk...but David Dahl is out for the season after blowing up his spleen.

Here's a little more on Eduardo: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/artic ... leid=26479

As if I couldn't love David Dahl anymore...
A normal person would just leave the spleen in. But for an athlete, there's an additional risk of the spleen rupturing again in a collision. David said, 'I can't play the rest of my career worrying about this, and I don't want to miss any more time this year than I have to.'

Removal of the spleen does come with other complications. Dahl will need to receive yearly vaccinations to ensure he doesn't get sick. He'll also have to take medications that prevent minor illness from turning into something more serious.
By choosing to remove his spleen, he's gone from a year timetable to 4-6 weeks. Please bet against him. #boss

Joining Slade Heathcott, Dilson Herrera, Jake Lamb, Eduardo Rodriguez, & Blake Swihart...congrats to Matt Wisler & Domingo Santana for continuing to grow the IBC Nats into a force to be reckoned with.

As nice as another incredibly quality start from Eduardo Rodriguez is...congrats to Matt Wisler for crushing his first MLB start (8 ip, 6 h, 1 er, 0 bb, 2 k), culminating with the W.

What up young buck!

Adrian Rondon, SS, Rays (GCL Rays, R): 2-3, 2B, 2 BB. In his professional debut, the Rays jumped Rondon, their $3 million investment, all the way to the United States to face much older domestic competition, and the youngster did not disappoint. Still just 16, Rondon shows the kind of elite offensive tools that even a cost-conscious organization like the Rays are willing to open up their wallets for. Bringing him stateside less than a year after signing is an aggressive move for the Rays, but Rondon is the type of talent that can handle the challenge.

Dude is unconscious right now...and showing some serious pop. He's up to .268/.363/.472. Moore says below he's sacrificed his hit tool for pop...but he also got off to a crap start, so hopefully the recent Piscotty is the real Piscotty.

Stephen Piscotty, OF, Cardinals (Memphis, AAA): 3-5, 2 R, HR. The knock on Piscotty last year was that he didn’t show the power traditionally required at a corner-outfield position. This season, while repeating the same Triple-A level, he’s already surpassed his 2014 total of home runs. He’s done so at the sacrifice, to a certain extent, of his hit tool and his contact ability, but the sacrifice is well warranted, as he’ll have to show at least moderate power in order to be an everyday player in right field. The bar there isn’t what it once was, but it still requires clearing a bar in the power department, and Piscotty is beginning to show he can do that.

A belated congrats to Steven Matz on another epic start for an IBC Nats prospect in his MLB debut.

7 2/3 ip's of 2 er with 8 baserunners & 6 k's. He also went 3-3 with 4 rbi's.

Dear IBC,

I'm coming.

BP Mid-Season Top 50 - Lot of graduates, and Vogelbach on the Top 101 Top 10 List...

26. OF David Dahl (Rockies)
Age: 21 (4/1/94)
Placement on pre-season 101: 24
Current MiLB level/Affiliate: Double-A New Britain

Developmental Update: With another season marred by serious injury, Dahl’s stock may be taking an unfair hit among fans, but his potential as a middle-of-the-order hitter and middle-of-the-diamond defender has not changed. Dahl is a gifted natural hitter with an improving approach and projection for average to slightly above-average power. His glove will play in center field and when the entire package is put together, Dahl has a good chance at becoming an impact player. –Mark Anderson

37. RHP Grant Holmes (Dodgers)
Age: 19 (3/22/96)
Placement on pre-season 101: 79
Current MiLB level/Affiliate: Low-A Great Lakes

Developmental Update: Holmes fell to the 23rd pick of the 2014 draft for reasons that seem silly now, and along with Bradley Zimmer he appears to be one of the steals of last year’s class. He can get his fastball up to 98 but sits more comfortably at 92-94 with late life, and he’ll flash a plus curveball with hard spin and depth as well. Assuming the command improves and the change shows more consistency, this is a potential no. 2 starter who can pile up the strikeouts. –Christopher Crawford

38. SS Daniel Robertson (Rays)
Age: 21 (3/22/94)
Placement on pre-season 101: 66
Current MiLB level/Affiliate: Double-A Montgomery

Developmental Update: Smart players can find ways to work around physical limitations; Robertson is a smart player. His ability to stick at shortstop for the time being is thanks in large part to his ability to read the ball very well off the bat and smart pre-pitch positioning. Robertson also displays feel for the strike zone and some intriguing power, which give him a chance to be a solid-average contributor at the highest level. –Mauricio Rubio

After dominating AA, Aaron Blair had a rough start to his AAA career. Well, that's been turned on its head. Over his last 4 starts, Blair has dropped his era from 5.16 to 3.38, while allowing 21 h's in 25.1 ip's. He's also k'd a batter per 9 over that time, while allowing only 5 runs. Boy can pitch...

After getting on the national radar last year, Jorge Mateo has done nothing to slow down the praise coming his way. As a 20-year old in A/HA, Mateo has slashed .283/.349/.403, while swiping an eye-popping 71 bases and swatting an even more impressive 35 ebh's. His defense could stand some more consistency, but he appears to be a SS all the way.

At the All-Star Game this past season, Blake Swihart, after tearing apart AAA to start the year, was struggling with a .241/.279/.323 slash line. Plenty of explanations would have worked...young catcher, transition to majors, handling an MLB staff, etc. etc. etc.

Swihart's response? Fuck that noise. In the second half of the season, Swihart has slashed .354/.415/.490 to push his overall slash line to .288/.337/.393. This kid's good.

Given I have almost zero prospects yet, but a lineup & rotation of 23-29 year olds, the Sam Coonrod write-ups were nice to see from BA.

Nnamdi (New Jersey): Coonrod ranking at #6 and Mejia at #10 seems reversed at first glance. What are you hearing on Coonrod that has him ranked #6? After all Mejia is nearly a year younger and performed well at a higher level.

J.J. Cooper: In a flip of what I had heard after last season now I am hearing from more scouts who think Coonrod stays a starter and think Mejia ends up in the pen. It’s not unanimous by any stretch of the imagination, but Coonrod impressed this year with better feel, better control and better ability to carry his stuff deep into games than scouts had expected to see.

Lot of love for one of the newest Nats...

Kyle McGrath, LHP, San Diego Padres (AFL Peoria Javelinas): 3 IP, H. McGrath was one of my dudes in the season’s first couple months as an exotic over-the-top lefty. The former 36th rounder spent the season dominating the socks off minor leaguers with an outstanding changeup (0.93 ERA, 41 hits allowed in 67.1 innings, with 78 strikeouts to 10 walks), and it was apparently enough for the Padres to flirt with converting him to starting this fall. So far, so good: yesterday marked his fourth three-inning stint of the short season, and he’s allowed all of one run on five hits to date. He tops out in the high-80s and doesn’t have the most durable frame for a starter, but results are results, and he’ll be yet another interesting arm in the Padres’ system to follow next year, especially if the experiment continues.

Blash isn't exactly a youngster, but he has a real opportunity for break out this year, as multiple projections systems kind of like him...and he's absolutely destroying this spring.

Jabari Blash, rf, Padres. Blash, a Rule 5 pick in December 2015 who the Padres retained by sending cash to the Mariners, has been one of the hottest hitters this spring. On Sunday, he clubbed a grand slam, his sixth homer this spring, and was 3-for-4 in a 9-4 win over the Cubs. Blash was expected to make the Padres roster thanks to his big raw power, but the injury to Alex Dickerson opens up additional playing time for the 27-year-old righthanded hitter.

Yasel Antuna: (from BP) ...Signed for $3.9 million in 2016, Antuna projects to be a middle of the order thumper hitting for average and high OBP providing average corner outifeld defense in his best seasons.

Also...
Ben Lively has nothing left to do in AAA. 2.40 era with a WHIP below 1.00...again.

Josh Rogers was promoted to AA after dominating the FSL.

Garrett Hampson is really good at baseball, still.

Sam Hilliard's OPS is up to .933.

Jake Rogers, the catcher, was promoted to HA and is hitting BETTER.

Cody Thomas has been on fire recently after a tough start.

Mark Karaviotis is OPSing .930 as a 21 year old SS in A.

Facing some roster crunchiness, I made a calculated move to hold onto Jordan Stephens despite the knowledge he'd miss a bunch of time to start the season...and that he received little prospect-love in the off-season. He's got a long way to go, but that doesn't look overly dumb.

Jumped straight to AA, Stephens has picked up where he left off last year firing 12 scoreless IP's to start '17, with 11 k's and a 0.75 whip. He features two no-doubt plus pitches with his fastball/curveball, and can turn over a changeup, but has no real consistency with it yet.

http://www.milb.com/player/index.jsp?pl ... g/2017/ALL

And while I don't feature a ton of top-end current talent, Sam Hilliard, Garrett Hampson, Mark Karaviotis, Josh Rogers, Jakson Reetz are having incredibly strong campaigns...while James Reeves has come back nicely from a disastrous first outing. Schuknecht and Thomas have had excellent runs lately, keeping hope for their abilities after struggling to start. The rest have been at extended with their seasons upcoming.

Corbin Burnes: Just written up in BA's prospect report this morning, across HA/AA, this '16 pick is 7-0 with a 0.97 era, 0.81 whip, and a strikeout every inning across 14 starts and 83.2 ip's. Improved command has seen his above average stuff clearly play up.

Sam Hilliard - .305/.378/.511 at HA...and has got lots of positive pub
Josh Rogers - 8-4, 3.22 era across HA/AA...first hiccup at AA last night
Garrett Hampson - .315/.381/.437 at HA...and a SS!
Mark Karaviotis - .331/.428/.457 at A...and a SS!
John Schuknecht - ..234/.331/.422 at A...been on fire since a horrific start
Cody Thomas - .242/.303/.467 at A...been on fire since a horrific start
Rogelio Armenteros - 2-3, 1.93 era, 1.04 whip at AA...he's really good
Jordan Stephens - 0-1, 0,98 era, 0.82 whip at AA...he's really good
Tyler Wells - 4-1, 1.89 era, 0.91 whip, 80/57 k/ip...newby is really good

Think I'm going to be quite happy he dropped in the draft...

Akil Baddoo, OF, Twins (Rookie, GCL): 4-5, 3 R, 3B, 3 RBI, SB
A growth spurt has changed Baddoo’s profile from that of a speedy center fielder to more of an average runner that fits better in left field thanks to a below-average arm. With that growth spurt and his burgeoning strength, Baddoo has added power projection to go with his natural contact ability. He is an aggressive swinger that doesn’t take many pitches, leaving him susceptible to being worked by spin and softer offerings, but at just 18-years old there will be plenty of opportunities to refine his game.
