Your Worst Drop

Post by Cardinals »

I created a thread a few years ago for best created player (viewtopic.php?t=5208), but who is your worst drop?

Here's a few of mine:

Pirates Kenley Jansen CL Release 12/1/09 12:36 pm
Pirates Chris Archer SP Release 4/30/10 2:17 pm
Pirates Matt Carpenter 3B Release 6/20/10 6:20 pm
Pirates Andrew Miller MR Release 5/19/11 3:52 pm
Pirates Mookie Betts CF Release 3/1/12 11:26 am
Pirates Aledmys Diaz SS Release 5/1/15 9:26 am

Alex Reyes as well, but the current player was a duplicate, so my initial create was deleted.[/url]

Adam Jones because he got moved off shortstop.
Alex Cobb because I wanted a pinch runner for September 2009 and thought I could hide him as a free agent for a month
Francisco Cervelli after his PEDS suspension
Vince Velasquez after his TJ surgery

2015 Villar if he returns last year's form
2014 Law if he becomes closer material

Side note on Cobb, pretty sure I am the only team of 5 that has gotten any real value from him...though I am sure Pat is hoping for the best.

4/18/13 Brian Dozier dropped for Victor Payano
- lol
6/14/09 Joey Bats dropped for Willie fucking Bloomquist
- I think of this every time I see Joey Bats

None of these are bad drops if the player sucked at the time and didn't have much projection.

A guy like Justin Turner had never shown more than 25th man potential until Marlon Byrd fixed his swing.

I dropped Samardzija when it looked like he was going to be a pen guy with no control. It wasn't a bad drop at the time and I signed Scott Atchison, who wound up having a good year or two.

I also see that I dropped Brock Holt (Release Sep 30, 10:42 am), who I have no recollection of ever having.

I do see this transaction under the Mets (no year listed) Max Scherzer Release Apr 25, 8:29 pm (but that had to be before I took them over....Jim!!!)
2008-2023 Mets: 1,054-1,223...463%
2006-2008 Rockies: 242-244...498%

IBC Total: 1,296-1,467...469%
2022: lost WC
2023: lost WC

Guess I'll be wearing my Jose Bautista shirt if me and Nick ever hang out again.

At least Jake dropped Justin Turner when he was bad and didn't trade him when he was good because he thought Pat asked for Jacob Turner. I'll still be mad about that in 20 years

I don't really have any standout drops that I can see while GMing the Rox..

I'm sure my time as the Reds GM would be quite different, but I haven't decided if I care enough to dig - and I don't remember when I was booted. Jerks. :P

I've probably topped it since but during my first season back in 2005 I signed but later dropped Josh Johnson. In fact, Johnson might have been my first signing. Was either him or Volquez.

Travis Shaw Release May 25, 5:39 am (but I did so to create Jordan Montgomery who may be a solid signing)

maybe Dylan 12-Cozens Release Jan 30, 10:13 am (to draft Austin 14-Cousino who is no longer with me)

Anthony DeSclafani Release Oct 23, 4:13 pm (to sign Raudy 0-Read)

John Lackey Release Apr 8, 5:23 am (no idea why as no other transaction dated near this)

Collin McHugh Release Feb 1, 4:07 pm (to sign Adonis Garcia)

my worst: Salvador Perez Release May 24, 12:18 am (to create Dan 0-Remenowsky) ... I had just created Perez March 30

Justin Turner Release Jan 7, 11:57 am (needed for a trade) ... he was just a UT player back then

Mitch Moreland Release Oct 19, 9:59 am (to create Bryan 0-Petersen)

That as far back as I went. Saw a handful of failed starters who later became decent middle relievers as well ... didn't go back to look at my Mets tenure.

I don't have a lot of regrets, but what I regret, I regret hard...

I dropped Steven Matz twice and Lorenzo Cain three times. I dropped McHugh & Drury, but picked them both back up and got value out of him. Didi Gregorius and Ketel Marte are two guys I'd like to have back.

We all know I would've traded him had I kept him. Players don't stay with me very long. That said...

Carlos Santana

Honorable mention:
Francisco Liriano
J.D. Martinez (I gave him away to Z cuz I was going to drop him anyway)

Not signing Felix Hernandez the day before JB picked him up was the biggest mistake I've made. Talked myself into thinking I needed to keep Doug Mirabelli.

Hey you saw what happened to the Red Sox when they got rid of Mirabelli

Like others, I've also dropped Travis Shaw (7/14/15), Brock Holt (4/25/15), and Anthony DeSclafani (8/10/14), who I created.

And also, Adam Duvall (7/10/14), JA Happ (6/14/14), and Edinson Volquez (10/30/14).

There may also be some prospects who come back to bite me, like Mitch Haniger (8/31/16) Dylan Cozens (7/2/15), and Juan Soto (5/27/16).

Didn't see anything debilitating, but I also have historically acquired more players via trade than waivers.

Matt Duffy
German Marquez
Pedro Severino

Those are the first that come to mind.
