Rockies Host Personal Winter Meetings

Post by Mets »

Having talked to no less than a dozen of you guys this weekend, the Rockies have made some tweaks and shook off some dust from the roster.

Yankees trade
2007 Draft, Pick 147, , , , , , ,
to Rockies for
Neal Cotts, , , , , , ,

Cotts was a throw in from a previous deal, and a candidate to be cut. Took what I could get for him and cleared a roster spot.

Angels trade
2007 Draft, Pick 123, , , , , , ,
to Rockies for
Brandon Medders, , , ,

I always liked Medders, and I've been rooting for him, but I have enough depth at RP, and no room for a specialist.

Cubs trade
Ruben Gotay, 2007 Draft, Pick 102, Jeremy Reed, Jorge Sosa, , , ,
to Rockies for
Ryan Dempster, Juan Gutierrez, , , , , ,

Two needs that I had were OF depth & Utility INF. I approached Gabe about Gotay & within 1 hour we had a deal. Gutierrez has been popular and has a lot of potential, but he doesn't fit in the Rockies plans. Dempster has been a Rockie for the past two years, but his role was going to be uncertain with his potential starter projection next season.

Sosa gives me some flexability, but will be lucky to ever throw a pitch at home (Coors).

Rockies trade
Chase Wright, Juan Pierre, , , , , ,
to Rangers for
Matthew Maloney, Shaun Marcum

This is a deal that's been in the works for a while. There have been 3-4 teams bidding for Pierre this offseason. When I had a chance to get a young pitcher to add depth, I finally gave in. Maloney was the motivation for me to push the deal across. I've followed him in the Phillies org., and I think he has an opportunity to crach the Reds rotation in 2008. Wright was a throw in from another deal, and unlikely to get a chance in Colorado.

Nationals trade
2007 Draft, Pick 78, , , , , , ,
to Rockies for
Nate Robertson

This was a huge mistake on my part. Blue Jays messaged me saying he was offering a pick I wanted. I went to trade offers, saw Robertson, assumed it was the Jays offer, and accepted...then I realized it was a 3rd rounder from the Nats, but a man of my word, I didn't challenge it. Lesson: Never make deals while cooking pancakes and while company is destroying your house.

DevilRays trade
Sergio 5-Romo, Peter Moylan, Reggie Willits, , , , ,
to Rockies for
Pick 140
2007 Draft, Pick 20, 2007 Draft,

I had 3 very attractive offers for my #20 pick, but in the end I wound up taking one that came out of nowhere. After dealing Pierre, I wanted a top of the line up CF with good OBP. Enter Willits. After moving Dempster, I wanted a 7th inning guy with good GB rate...enter Moylan....Romo is a guy who averages 2 k's per inning, so that was attractive. I threw in the pick in the end because I didn't have the roster spot for it anyway. While this might not have been the best deal on the table, it was the one that would make me the most competitive in 2008...I'll worry about 2009 & Beyond in other deals.

6 deals...one day....and not a whole lot has changed....got rid of some junk..picked up some picks...got slightly younger....all in a days work.
2008-2023 Mets: 1,054-1,223...463%
2006-2008 Rockies: 242-244...498%

IBC Total: 1,296-1,467...469%
2022: lost WC
