2016 IBC White Sox Trade (1)

Post by Padres »

White Sox receive Francellis Montas, Indians Draft Pick 4, Ronald 14-Acuna

Red Sox receive Kris Medlen, WhiteSox Draft Pick 3

I like Kris Medlen - he quite frankly would have fronted my SP next season although on most teams he would be a mid-rotation to back of rotation SP - and I hope he stays healthy and gives Pat a good solid season. But the 2016 IBC White Sox are not likely to overtake the very good teams in front of them in the AL Central next season so when I had a chance to pick up the fireballing (mid-to-upper 90's fastball - got over 100 a few times), Montas I went after it. On my team Montas could be a mid-rotation starter or late inning reliever next season though I see him more likely ending up as CL down the road. I definitely believe the 22 year old Montas will provide me more long term quality pitching then 30 year Medlen though it quite likely that Medlen will SIM better in 2016.

I also indicated an interest in Acuna, a very young speedy. toolsy CF with power potential who signed last year as an international free agent and played stateside this season making 2 BA top 20 Rookie League lists. Ben Balder wrote of him, "A pretty well-rounded [ball player]. He’ll show you plus run times, barrels the ball consistently, knows the strike zone and gives you a good dose of power for a 17-year-old kid that’s only going to improve, and he projects to stay in center field. That’s a nice balance of tools and skills across the board." I had to flip draft picks (pick 64 for pick 99) to get him included in the deal but I'll take the chance that Acuna doesn't fizzle out ... and I kept my 2 top 50 picks which remain important picks for me.

Note: I dropped Rosell Herrera to keep the roster legal as my depth at CF (Almonte, Naquin, Rodriguez, May, 14-Acuna and 14-Stokes) allows me to build for the future and Herrera should just be rated at OF in the future.

WhiteSox receive: Aaron Altherr, Kelby Tomlinson, Nick Martinez & Ben Paulsen

Nationals receive: Hector Santiago & White Sox Draft Pick 5

Quite simply I traded my likely best SP to upgrade 3 positions on the team. Santiago would have been my #1 and is a legitimate #3 and I believe he should SIM well for the Nationals - especially after the solid first half of his 2015 season. Altherr took advantage of his mid-August call up in 2015. His first seven hits in the majors all went for extra-base hits, a trend that continued over the final weeks of the season. Of his 33 hits, 20 went for extra bases including five home runs in 137 at-bats. Altherr is also a defensive upgrade over the now-departed Alvarez and Garcia, last season's RF combo. Tomlinson hit a solid .303/.358/.404 in his 178 at-bats while playing solid 2B filling in for the injured Panik. While I expect he will become a Utility Player in the future he will be an upgrade both offensively and defensively over the now-departed Johnson for the 2016 IBC White Sox. Paulsen finished out the 2015 season hitting a respectable .277/.326/.462 in 116 games (91 of those games came at first base), totaling 19 doubles, 4 triples, 11 home runs and proved himself a reliable 1B. Both Tomlinson and Paulsen offer versatility down the road as they also play the OF. Martinez is simply a 5th SP, LR option who I do not expect to start the 2016 IBC season on the 25 person active roster but he certainly represents an upgrade over the now-departed Wagner..

Note: I dropped Alvarez, Johnson and Wagner to keep my roster at 50 as the players received essentially replaced them. Johnson was hardest decision as I thought hard between him, Sanchez and Saladino but in the end his porous defense and health concerns as well as the latter two players versatility lead me to cut him in spite of his awesome speed.

White Sox receive: Kendall Graveman

Athletics receive: Steven Souza

Until I acquired Aaron Altherr I would have never thought of trading Souza who I believe will improve as young COF and who Nils used to have with his old Giants team but I am comfortable with Altherr, Schebler and Rodriguez manning my COF slots next season (and given their relative youth perhaps for a few years) as they develop and improve themselves.

In return I get a pitcher well suited to the Cell (his GO/AO was 1.44 with Oakland). According to the data on Fangraphs.com, the 24 year old Graveman worked off of his two-seam sinker and his cutter for much of the season, mixing in his change-up and a slider that looked like a slower version of his cutter. His fastball topped out at 94 and sat mostly around 90, while his change-up was around 83 and his slider averaged 76. Hitters had trouble getting hits off of Graveman’s cutter (.229 BAA). He started off the 2015 MLB season terribly and was sent down to AAA. After returning from Nashville, Graveman’s ERA with the A’s was 3.36 in 99.1 innings. Graveman proved from May-August that he can be an above-average starter in the big leagues. His problems in April seemed to stem from over-throwing, which caused his pitches to flatten out over the heart of the plate.

I do not expect a great SIM projection for Graveman in 2016 but I do expect it improve in 2017 and beyond.

White Sox receive Nate Jones

Cubs receive Francellis Montas

I had just traded for Montas because I like his future potential and still believe he will eventually become a lock down RP for the real life Dodgers and for Pat's IBC Cubs. But I reached out to Pat because I like Jones better - both now and for the next few years.

Jones immediate past history includes Tommy John surgery followed by a display of potential and nasty stuff but inconsistent performance, including his eye-popping but still erratic 19 innings (3.36 ERA, five dingers, but 27 strikeouts) when he returned in 2015. The White Sox believe he is healthy and so do I and if Jones turns out anything like the 8th inning shutdown reliever that a 100 mph fastball with a biting 92 mph slider, or a 29.6% strikeout rate since 2013 indicates, then this is a good deal for both teams. Fangraphs recently wrote, "He throws very hard – according to Daren Willman, he was the only pitcher to throw all of his fastballs harder than 95 mph last year ... The stuff Jones has is a blessing and a curse. No right-hander got as many whiffs per pitch on the slider as Jones did last year, and only four got more grounders on the pitch. It was the hardest slider in baseball at 92.7 mph. Pairing that with the third-hardest sinker in baseball has given him near unhittable stuff when he’s been healthy. He has a top 25 swinging strike rate since 2013, at least." Nasty!

If he stays healthy and performs like this it is a good deal ... if not I am a dumb shit which Pat has already told me - so what else is new.
