Trade thoughts ...

Tyler Pastornicky to White Sox (10/5)
Carlos Quentin to Cardinals

This trade, although certainly not a blockbuster, set the tone and new direction that the IBC White Sox are taking. A change is obviously necessary after two straight .500 seasons marked by horrific finishes the last third of the season. After a couple of years of ol' Earl Weaver thinking, i.e., win with the long ball (though I will note most of his good teams had good starting pitching as well) the emphasis is shifting to better team defense with more range and versatility; a greater emphasis on OBP and team speed with a lessened focus on power resulting in a move away from the base clogging sort of offense that plagued the team in particular the last third of the season.

Aaron and had a few discussions about Q going back into the 2013 IBC season so I was aware of his interest. Q is a solid OF when healthy but he was also part of my sort of DH bunch of players like him, Carter, etc. When injuries hit me in the middle infield last season I had problems resulting in my picking up waiver players like Escobar so Pastornicky represented a viable upgrade for me. He will likely never play shortstop on an everyday basis but he does provide value as a versatile infielder who has shown promising offensive skills. He gives the IBC White Sox more athleticism ... He gives us a guy that can run. He doesn't have Hamilton-like speed but he's a threat, and he can put the ball in play.

I hope Q goes on to have a healthy few years for Aaron ... at best, Pastornicky ends up being a solid 2B for me in the next few years and at worst I believe he will be a reliable player off the bench capable of helping out at 2B, SS and even CF in a pinch.

David Hale to White Sox (11/4)
Josh Phegley to Indians

When Danny and I discussed this trade Phegley was my 3rd Catcher behind Stassi and the since-released Ross. Thus he was expendable though I knew I would not get (or expect to get) great talent back in return.

And indeed, Hale is one of those "tweeners". Hale performed stunningly well in spot duty for real-life Atlanta in September (2 GS, 14 K/1 BB in 11 IP). Most experts are not sure whether he’s a long-term starter or reliever so I can expect he will be considered a swingman in the SIM. He’s been a starter in the minors with decent results at every level and there is a good chance he could see time in the IBC White Sox rotation in 2014. But ultimately he may end as a solid relief pitcher where his 92-94 mph fastball will likely see an uptick and his slider will prove very effective. He is an excellent fielder and has a strong pick-off move. Although he is now 27 his arm is young as he didn't become a full-time pitcher until 2009 and has only been a standard starting pitcher for 2 years.

It will be nice if Phegley (like Lavarnway) turns out to the hitter that the real life White Sox and Danny hopes he does but I needed some versatility and assistance with my pitching while I wait for some of youth to get ready and I believe Hale addresses a short-term back of the rotation need while providing me long-term depth as well.

Leury Garcia to White Sox (11/4)
Adalberto 11-Mejia to White Sox
Mike Olt to White Sox
Dayan Viciedo to White Sox
Rex Brothers to Mariners
Chase Headley to Mariners

When I opened up the discussion with Brennan I was specifically interested in Garcia - a player I liked in the Rangers farm system and one who filled a real need for me. This winter he played in the Dominican Winter League and finished up with a .260/.338/.339 line for Gigantes del Cibao in 33 games. He stole 12 bases in 13 attempts. Those numbers are pretty much the major league upside for the switch-hitter, which should be more than adequate for a player with his defensive value and versatility. Speed, decent OBP, versatility and strong D is a combo that will have Garcia playing quite a bit for the IBC White Sox.

Mejia is a solid southpaw with strong ground-ball tendencies. Although he doesn’t have spectacular velocity (reportedly 94 mph in the AFL) or strikeout totals, Mejia has an advantage in that he already has the skills that could enable him to have a long, effective major league career. He’s said to have a very good sinking fastball and slider that will deceive hitters, and he is working on a change-up as well all of which should play well in the Cell eventually.

Olt is purely a bounce-back candidate ... admittedly a gamble, he was simply too good earlier in the Rangers system to be as bad as he was last season and my hope is that he has medically corrected the vision issues that plagued him. He is a solid defensive 3B with a strong power tool who does strike out a lot. At worst I hope he turns out to a Chris Carter-type hitter but with the ability to decently defend the corner infield positions. At best a potential 25 HR, 90 RBI middle of the order starter. This season I expect he will ride the pines lot for the IBC White Sox.

Viciedo is average at best defensively, but his potential power numbers can overcome that. "The Tank" hit 25 homers and 18 doubles with 78 RBI while hitting .265 in his breakout 2012 season, but his plate discipline is still far, far away from what it should be. Still the 3B turned OF is only 25 years old and has seen only two seasons of consistent playing time, and his strikeouts/walk ratio has nowhere to go but up. Having rid the team of most of the power-first hitters there is a spot on the roster for Viciedo sharing time at the COF slots as well as DH.

Clearly the Mariners scored some solid talent in RP Brothers and 3B Headley but I got back two players who will fill areas of immediate need for the White Sox (Garcia and Viciedo), one player who - barring injury - will be a strong mid-rotation SP (Mejia) and an uncertain gamble but worth the long term potential (Olt).
