MiLB PLAYERS OF THE WEEK

Isotopes' McMahon powers Players of the Week

...Ryan McMahon, 1B/2B/3B has been named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week after going 16-for-27 (.593) with five homers, four doubles and 14 RBIs over six games for the Isotopes from June 12-18. It's his second Player of the Week honor of the season -- he also earned the award in the Eastern League from April 17-23.
McMahon essentially locked in Player of the Week during a three-game stretch from Wednesday to Friday against Fresno in Albuquerque. He went deep five times over that stretch, twice on both Thursday and Friday. Arguably his best performance came Friday, when he went 5-for-6 with two homers, two doubles and seven RBIs in a 15-14 loss.
Since joining the Isotopes, the left-handed slugger has put together a .448/.480/.806 line with five homers, nine doubles and 19 RBIs in 16 games. He opened 2-for-15 in his first four games with Albuquerque but has hits in each of his last 12 contests -- a streak in which he's hit .538...

...Jose Miguel Fernandez, 2B, .538/.556/.846, 7 G, 14-for-26, 2 2B, 2 HR, 8 RBI, 3 R, 2 K

BASEBALL PROSPECTUS

Prospect of the Weekend:

Ryan McMahon, 3B/1B/2B, Rockies (Triple-A, Albuquerque): 9-15, 3 R, 4 2B, 2 HR, 9 RBI, 2 K. After plenty of in-person looks at McMahon last summer in Hartford, I only caught him twice before his promotion, and he certainly appeared to have made strides with consistent hard contact despite an aggressive approach. That trend has continued in a brief stint at Triple-A, and when you add in some newfound defensive versatility, he could be an interesting option for a contending Rockies club down the stretch.

Friday June 16th:

JoJo Romero, RHP, Phillies (Low-A, Lakewood): 8 IP, 4 H, 0 R/ER, 0 BB, 10 K. I mentioned Romero a couple of weeks ago, citing my intrigue after seeing him in the NYPL last summer. Well, he’s at it again, and I remain intrigued.

BA PROSPECT HOT SHEET (June 23)

7. Ryan McMahon, 3B, Rockies (22) Triple-A Albuquerque (Pacific Coast)

After scalding the ball in a return to Double-A, McMahon has followed suit at Triple-A. He moved from Dunkin’ Donuts Park, which has skewed toward pitchers in its first year, to the hitters haven of the PCL and has taken advantage. He was one of three minor leaguers with 13 hits this week, and has put up a 1.165 OPS with five home runs in his first 19 games in Triple-A.

15. JoJo Romero, LHP, Phillies (20) Low Class A Lakewood (South Atlantic)

Romero has been solid all year, but he delivered his best start as a pro this week. He set a career-high with 10 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings, and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 1.27 this month. Romero has allowed more than two earned runs only twice in 12 starts this year.

17. Miguel Andujar, 3B, Yankees (22) Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (International)

Andujar got his long-awaited promotion to Triple-A this week on both merit and opportunity. He crushed the ball in May and June at Double-A Trenton, and when Gleyber Torres went down with Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, that opened a spot for Andujar. He has at least one hit in 28 of his last 30 games.

BP MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE (June 22)

Edwin Rios, CI, Los Angeles Dodgers (Double-A Tulsa): 1-3 BB, R, HR, RBI - That’s three homers in his last four, currently at .321/.361/.558. Required viewing of the day: the one he hit on Tuesday.

BA PROSPECT REPORT (June 29)

Luis Castillo, rhp, Reds. Castillo was the Marlins' No. 2 prospect before he was sent to Cincinnati for Dan Straily. While Straily has been more than solid for the Marlins, the Reds are happy with their end of the deal. Castillo did not get the win Wednesday in Cincinnati's 4-3 win over the Brewers, but he whiffed a career-high nine in 5.2 innings in just his second MLB start. Castillo showed a fastball that touched 99 mph and a sharp slider in his home debut.

Miguel Andujar, dh, Yankees. The Yankees did not envision a scenario in which their No. 12 prospect would be in the majors this season, but a spate of injuries forced the move. Andujar, who was impressive in spring training, made a quick impact in his debut Wednesday, going 3-for-4 with a walk and four RBIs in the Yankees' 12-3 win. Andujar has a level swing and a quick bat with plus raw power that could manifest with more reps. He's a bit rough at third base, but has the arm and actions that with polish could allow him to stick there

BP MINOR LEAGUE UPDATE (Games of June 28)

Chris Shaw, 1B/OF?, San Francisco Giants (Triple-A, Sacramento): 3-4, 2 R, 2B, HR, 3 RBI - With the Giants almost out of playoff contention, and getting awful production from their LF’s; Shaw might get a look before the season is over. His plus to better raw power is translating more to games, and initial reports suggest he could pass in LF.
