Blue Jays Prospect Report - May 2017

Post by Orioles »

Recent updates from around the web...

BASEBALL AMERICA HOT SHEET (May 2017)

May 26

12. Jose Miguel Fernandez, 2b, Dodgers (29) - Double-A Tulsa (Texas) - Another in the Dodgers’ flotilla of Cubans, Fernandez has adjusted quite well to the minor leagues. Yes, he’s 29 years old, but he’s quickly showing the feel to hit and the contact skills he was lauded for before he left the island. In 138 at-bats with Double-A Tulsa, Fernandez has struck out just 15 times.

May 19

5. Jose Almonte, rhp, Diamondbacks (21) - High Class A Visalia (California) - The Diamondbacks acquired Almonte from the Red Sox in the Brad Ziegler trade last year, and the Dominican righthander has already established himself as one the top arms in Arizona’s system. Almonte struck out nine in six innings in each of his last two starts, and most importantly limited his walks after struggling with that early in the season.

18. Keibert Ruiz, c, Dodgers (18) - Low Class A Great Lakes (Midwest) - The Dodgers signed Ruiz as an amateur out of Venezuela in 2014 primarily because of his defense, but he is showing himself to be quite the threat at the plate, too. Ruiz’s latest big week (8-for-15) pushed his average to .320 in his first taste of full-season ball. Overall he boasts a .339/.380/.452 slash line in his young career.

May 12

18. Chris Shaw, 1b/lf, Giants (23) - Double-A Richmond (Eastern) - Shaw has been hammering the ball in a park that suppresses home runs. He’s hitting .320/.425/.530 with four homers in 29 games, with as many walks (17) as strikeouts (17).

May 5

7. Patrick Mazeika, c, Mets (23) - High Class A St. Lucie (Florida State) - A .348 hitter in college, Mazeika has done nothing but hit in three years in the Mets system. He went 12-for-22 with a home run this week, but what’s even more encouraging is that he’s staying healthy and hitting for significantly more power, all while playing catcher three games out of four.

13. Danny Jansen, c, Blue Jays (22) - High Class A Dunedin (Florida State) - Not many batters hit .400 for a month, even in the minors leagues. Jansen did in April, when he hit .402 in 82 at-bats. He popped three extra-base hits this week, including a home run, and drew his fourth walk of the season, which are welcome embellishments for a batting line that had been driven by good fortune on balls in play.

BASEBALL AMERICA PROSPECT REPORT (May 26)

Dinelson Lamet, rhp, Padres. The Padres’ No. 9 prospect made his big league debut on the big stage at Citi Field to rave reviews. Lamet struck out eight in five innings–the first Padres pitcher with that many whiffs in his debut since Bob Shirley in 1977. Lamet touched 98 mph and sat mid-90s with his fastball and also showed a good slider in stifling the Mets on three hits in a 4-3 win. Manager Andy Green told reporters he was also impressed with Lamet’s changeup, which he said showed good sinking action.

BP Minor League Update (May 22)

Randy Arozarena, OF, St. Louis Cardinals (High-A, Palm Beach): 4-5, R, 2B, HR, 2 RBI - Signed last summer from Cuba, Arozarena looks the part of a future leadoff hitter with his plus speed and ability to make hard solid contact. While it is a question mark as to how much power he will have and how well he transitions to center, it is off to a good start.

Miguel Andujar, 3B, New York Yankees (Double-A, Trenton): 3-3, R, 2 2B, 2 RBI, SB - An exciting, toolsy player, Andujar has a lot of things to like. Plus raw power, a plus arm, plus speed, and plus bat speed. Still young, Andujar has time to figure things out, like how to use put all of his tools together to be a monster one day.

BA The List: Five Midwest League Pitchers You Should Know (May 24)

Trey Supak - rhp - Brewers

Supak was originally drafted by the Pirates in the supplemental second round in 2014 out of high school in Texas. He was traded to the Brewers in December 2015 with Keon Broxton for first baseman Jason Rogers. After middling seasons with the Pirates, Supak has blossomed with the Brewers. Still just 21, Supak leads the MWL in WHIP and is second to Duplantier in opponent average.
What They’re Saying: Supak’s fastball touches 95 and sits 92, one evaluator said. His curveball projects as a future above average pitch, and his changeup has a chance to be average. His command has a chance to be above average. The 6-5, 235-pounder has a workhorse build with a chance to be a mid-rotation type.

More Blue Jays farmhands off to good starts...

Juan Soto, of, Nationals (18) - Low Class A Hagerstown (South Atlantic) - Slashing .360/.427/.523 with just 8 K and 10 BB in 86 AB as one of the youngest players in the SAL.

Peter Lambert, rhp, Rockies (20) - Class A Adv Lancaster (California) - The Rockies 2015 2nd round pick has posted a solid 3.94 ERA as one of the younger players in the CAL league. Through 59.1 IP he's given up 53 H with 59 Ks.

JoJo Romero, lhp, Phillies (20) - Low Class A Lakewood (South Atlantic) - A 2016 4th round pick by Philadelphia out of Yavapai JC in Arizona, Romero is off to a blazing start in the SAL with a 2.20 ERA, 34 H and 45 K through 45.0 IP.

Edwin Rios, 3b, Dodgers (23) - Double-A Tulsa (Texas) - Rios has followed up his breakout 2016 campaign with a hot start at AA Tulsa, leading the AA Texas league in total bases and slashing .335/.355/.549 with 8 HR and 11 2B.

Jorge Alcala, rhp, Astros (21) - Class A Adv Buies Creek (Carolina) - The Dominican righthander did not miss a beat upon his promotion to the CAR league from the MWL and has a combined 2.21 ERA with 24 H and 46 K through 40.2 IP across 2 levels.

Luis Castillo, rhp, Reds (24) - Double-A Pensacola (Southern) - Fireballing Dominican righty Castillo can dial his FB up to 100+ mph and has impressed early with a 2.82 ERA, 1.04 WHIP, 46 H, 42 K and just 7 BB through 54.1 IP at AA Pensacola.

Ryan McMahon, 3b, Rockies (22) - Double-A Hartford (Eastern) - After a rough 2016 McMahon has rebounded nicely now that he and the Yard Goats have a place to call home. Logging time at 1B, 2B and 3B, the 2013 Colorado 2nd rounder has raked over the season's opening 2 months to the tune of .325/.391/.546, 6 HR, 12 2B, 7 SB, 0 CS, and perhaps most encouragingly, has cut his K-rate in half.

2023 GM Totals: 1780 W - 1460 L | 0.549 wpct | 89-73 (avg 162 G record)
