2015 IBC Marlins - Year In Review

Post by Orioles »

2015 IBC Miami Marlins
--------- YEAR IN REVIEW ---------

After yet another NLDS Game 5 loss to Pittsburgh it's time for the Marlins to look in the mirror and give the big club a top-to-bottom assessment before moving to Toronto...

Lineup

1. LF Brett Gardner* - 106 OPS+ | 16 HR | 20/5 SB/CS
Churned out a 4th consecutive solid offensive campaign for NY with the kind of speed and defense in LF (and CF) that makes him an asset at the top of a lineup.

2. 2B Robinson Cano* - 118 OPS+ | 21 HR | 34 2B
Though he didn't put up his usual MVP-caliber numbers, Bobby had a strong enough season on both sides of the ball to remain an elite 2B.

3. SS Troy Tulowitzki - 102 OPS+ | 17 HR | 128 G
Not the kind of season offensively we've come to expect from the game's best SS. Expect him to settle in and resume mashing at Rogers Centre (IBC and MLB).

4. 1B Brandon Belt* - 129 OPS+ | 18 HR | 33 2B | 9 SB
Delivered a nice season at the dish despite missing 25 games due to injury while leading all 1B in just about every defensive metric. On the verge of a breakout 2016.

5. 3B Evan Longoria - 110 OPS+ | 21 HR | 35 2B
Power numbers down over the past 2 years, but still solid offensively to go with stellar defense at 3B.

6. RF Wil Myers - 114 OPS+ | 8 HR | 60 G
Solid averages on offense for the former ROY despite being limited to just 60 games by injuries.

7. C Wilson Ramos - 64 OPS+ | 15 HR
After a few consecutive years of solid production limited by injuries, Ramos met his career-high in ABs with a whimper. He'll slide into a backup role in the IBC next season.

8. CF Denard Span* - 114 OPS+ | 11/0 SB/CS | 61 G
Injuries held him to just 61 games but when healthy he performed like a legit top-of-the-order threat and defensive wizard in CF.

Bench

OF Marlon Byrd - 101 OPS+ | 23 HR
Lived up to expectations as a RH power bat that can play all three OF positions with his 4th consecutive 20+ HR season.

1B Justin Bour* - 118 OPS+ | 23 HR
Exceeded expectations offensively in his first extended big league look at 27.

OF David Peralta* - 139 OPS+ | 17 HR | 10 3B
One of MLBs biggest breakout players in 2015. Former independent-leaguer absolutely mashed as the Dbacks cleanup hitter this year.

UT Wilmer Flores - 95 OPS+ | 16 HR
24 year old's bat improved as the season progressed. Multi-position eligibility at 2B/3B/SS and could be headed for a 2016 breakout offensivley.

C Stephen Vogt* - 114 OPS+ | 18 HR
Cooled a bit after murdering the ball in the first half but still finished the year among the top offensive catchers.

SS Alexei Ramirez - 79 OPS+ | 10 HR | 17 SB
Offensive performance dropped off from 2014, but speed and glove still make him a solid backup SS.

Rotation

1. SP David Price* - 2.45 ERA | 1.07 WHIP | 225 K
Another stellar season from the LH ace who dominated as both a Tiger and a Blue Jay in 2015.

2. SP Justin Verlander - 3.38 ERA | 1.09 WHIP
Despite being limited by injuries to 133.1 IP, the former ROY, Cy Young and MVP winner bounced back nicely from a forgettable 2014.

3. SP Danny Salazar - 3.45 ERA | 1.13 WHIP | 195 K
Inconsistent early in the season but delivered a strong second half and excellent overall numbers that make the 25 year-old a good bet for a 2016 breakout.

4. SP Mark Buehrle* - 3.81 ERA | 1.24 WHIP
198.2 IP broke a streak of 14 straight seasons with 200+ IP. Streak of 15 straight years with double-digit wins continued. Remarkably consistent and seemingly ageless.

5. SP Wily Peralta - 4.72 ERA | 1.54 WHIP
Injury-marred season was one to forget for the 26 year-old RH, whose performance dipped considerably from 2014.

Bullpen

CL Joaquin Benoit - 2.34 ERA | 0.90 WHIP
Another terrific season for the reliable 38 year-old RH.

SU Fernando Rodney - 4.74 ERA | 1.40 WHIP
Slim with the tilted brim got beat up in Seattle before a minor rebound after being dealt to the Cubs.

SU Tony Watson* - 1.91 ERA | 0.95 WHIP
The Pittsburgh southpaw was an absolute buzzsaw against both RH and LH batters, posting his second consecutive season with a sub-2.00 ERA.

MR Joel Peralta - 4.34 ERA | 1.24 WHIP
A second consecutive subpar season from Peralta may mean he's nearing the end of his career.

MR Jeremy Affeldt* - 5.86 ERA | 1.61 WHIP
A down year for the veteran lefthander, who posted his worst numbers in a decade.

LR Chris Hatcher - 3.69 ERA | 1.23 WHIP
A second straight quality season from the Dodger righty.

Others:

SP Jorge De La Rosa* - 4.17 ERA | 1.35 WHIP
A second straight year as a solid-average LH SP with a good K-rate. Rotational depth for 2016.

SP Eddie Butler - 5.90 ERA | 1.81 WHIP
Yuck. Awful performance by the young Rockies starter. Has to show some improvement in 2016.

2023 GM Totals: 1780 W - 1460 L | 0.549 wpct | 89-73 (avg 162 G record)
