Marlins Notes - September 2015

Minors Notes

2015 has been a strong year for IBC Marlins pitching prospects, with the trio of Alex Reyes, Blake Snell and Jose De Leon dominating their assignments and flying up prospect lists...
  • Snell was named BA's Minor League POY. From BA:
Few pitchers have approached Snell’s success over the past decade. He finished 15-4, 1.41 overall that included 163 strikeouts in 134 innings. His 1.41 ERA, which led all minor league qualifiers, is the lowest for a full-season pitcher since Justin Verlander’s 1.29 in 2005, and he ranked among the leaders in wins (tied for fourth), strikeouts (also tied for fourth), WHIP (ninth, 1.02) and opponent average (first, .182).
  • BA named Reyes as the top pitcher in the Cardinals organization. The young Dominican righthander should take his place on postseason prospect lists as one of the top pitching prospects in the game. From BA:
Few pitchers throughout baseball dominated the way power righthander Alex Reyes dominated in 2015. The starter blazed through two levels—high Class A Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield—going 5-7, 2.49 in 22 starts. Those numbers don’t do Reyes justice. The 21-year-old struck out more batters (151) in 101 innings than he allowed hits (70) and walks (49) combined. He struck out nearly 40 percent of batters faced and did so while maintaining his velocity deep into starts. Reyes routinely hit 101 mph with his fastball He’ll head to the Arizona Fall League, where he’ll prepare for his first big league spring training in 2016.
  • Snell and IBC Marlins 3B prospect Ryan McMahon were named to BA's 2015 Minor League All-Star Team. With 105 Ks in 76.2 IP at AA Tulsa, De Leon pitched his way onto the second team.

Dan (Watertown, MA): Hi Bill. Did Enyel De Los Santos earn any accolades for his performance in the AZL or was he not there long enough to leave a lasting impression? Thanks for the chat.

Bill Mitchell: De Los Santos didn’t get seen much with only five appearances in the AZL and was an under-the-radar guy, but drew the attention of scouts covering the Northwest League. He was still plenty raw earlier in the summer but has a big arm. Check in with Vince next Monday when he covers the Northwest League prospects.
